Eye Contact
Ok - I thought I'd share this with everyone - it made me feel good and maybe we all can pass it along.
When I went to the Dr to drop off some more paper work last week, there was a new patient being helping out of her van. She was trying to get to a wheelchair - I'd guess she weighed about 500 or so pounds. As I passed, we made eye contact and I smiled at her and said hi.
I ended spending about 20 minutes in the office manager's office before I left. As I was leaving, one of the men that had helped the new patient get out of the van stopped me, he said that his sister was a new patient and that I was one of the first strangers to make eye contact and smile at her in years. He said that it made her feel good, like she could actually do this.
I teared up when I got to the car - it was such a small gesture, but it meant so much to her. So you guys, if you can smile and say hi to someone that doesn't hear that often . . . do it!

Laurie bless your heart. When I was pre-op before my nursing school days it was hard for me to make eye contact, but I had this instructor who just wouldn't let up on me because she felt I was to shy but that wasn't the main reason. The main reason for not making eye contact is to maintain this invisable mode I thought I could have if I only avoided contact, wore big baggy clothes and always sat in the back of where ever I was going. But being on the losing side I have found that because people avoided eye contact with me anyways(still do) it was like a formed habit. I am glad your smile and eye contact brightened her day. It is a lonely world being MO. Thanks for sharing that.

Awesome
What an awesome thought-provoking story!!! How many times do we avoid eye contact without realizing exactly why we are doing it. Thanks for sharing this...I'll be looking for my next opportunity to contact the inner soul via the eye.

I just put my mascara on and it is running like Tammy Fae Bakkers eyes (LOL). This is so true that we need to remember to not be so wrapped up in our agenda and that we need to pass kindness out and pay it forward. Thanks for sharing!

What a great experience for you both! I had a similiar experience at my surgeons office. A smile and a kind word can make all the difference in the world to someone!

Laurie,
I read this post yesterday and forgot all about it by the time I was driving home. I had to stop for gas and at the off ramp this homeless man was crossing the street. You could tell he was avoiding peoples eyes in the other cars...that is when I remembered your post. He BARELY glanced at me and I smiled and gave a little head nod. He had to do a double take...he looked shocked...he then smiled back and kept walking. That totally made my day....I never thought a homeless guy would make my day, but it felt good.
Thanks for your post.
