Question for you gym hogs
Now that I am working out every day, I am totally addicted. My question is to you folks that are working out post-op. How long did you wait after surgery and what did you do? Did you try treadmill, eliptical, I assume no weight training for a while. Could you let me know?
And - of those of you working out now, did any of you work out before the surgery at all? I am hoping being in better shape will help my recovery. I mean, I'm doing 60 -80 crunches a day - I sure couldn't do that two months ago, so I hope it will help.
Thanks guys!

Hi Gina - I am working out at the gym pre-op. I am addicted to water aerobics, and I do the treadmill and elliptical and light weights for now (I just started back). If I can't make the gym, I will walk at a local track or in the neighborhood just to be moving everyday. It is such a change from my couch potato self, and I feel just so good!!

I started working out about 2 months post-op after I got clearance from my surgeon. I was hooked on the bike. When I first started I was kind of slow about 50 MPH Now I am biking about 92-98 MPH for about an hour. Great work out. I think it is great to get into habit before surgery. Gina you will have to put them crunches on hold post-op for awhile. Keep up the good work Gina, you too Whitney(go for the goal).

6 wks
I tried to start working out at about 6 weeks post op, but I couldn't do it. Physically I just had nothing to give. Walking up the stairs made me jelly weak. I fianally got my energy burst at about 10 weeks and here's my routine since then
I alternate my aerobic every two weeks between precore, bike, and treadmill. (I was told at the gym that if you stick to one too long your body adapts so that you're not getting as much of a workout.) 30 minutes of that and then I hit the weight machines. Upper body first and then lower. It takes about 45 minutes to get through all of them. I've had to cut back to 2 X a week, and sometimes on Saturdays. I hurt my ankle a while back and haven't been able to get back in the swing of it even thouugh I'm all better!
I DO try to get in a good run every morning, but that is more for my over all well being than it is fitness!

Oh my goodness - I'll have to get a doctors note and "pause" my gym membership if it could take that long. Everyone talks about walking, but I live on a hill, so walking out my door is quite a workout. I though maybe going to the gym and doing treadmill or eliptical might be easier. Guess I'll have to wait and see, really, but it is a good idea to know what to expect.
I am so into the gym. My husband is in the hospital and my daughter wouldn't stay in the child care today and I almost cried! I felt like such an idiot, but I've been doing so well and I HATE to miss a day! Ah well, I'll just run around and clean the house - that may burn a few calories.

Gina - not sure of how old your daughter is, but is she is still small, go walking with the stroller, or put her in a bicycle seat in the back of your bike...

I don't think it takes everyone that long. I was dealing with a stricture that I didn't get checked. Thought everything was the way it was supposed to be, but when I couldn't even swallow liquids without spitting them back up I figured out it WASN'T normal. So really I was taking in next to nothing for about 5 weeks.

It is 20 degrees out there! Even if I could stay warm, it is too risky for her.

I started off about 2 weeks after suregry with the bike, which bores the hell out of me. So, I started swimming. My doc wanted me to wait 6 weeks but I think he was just being paranoid. If you decide to swim early on, make sure to keep an eye on your incisions. Make sure you don't have any open sores still. The hole in my side where my drain was still had a scab so I put opne of those "film" stickies over it.

I did Curves pre-op, but fell off the wagon a bit here and there with other surgeries, crappy eating, and weight gain. I went back after the bypass in 6 weeks and felt just fine. I was told nothing extremely hard on the abdomen for 4 months post-op. When I gave examples they said everything at Curves was fine, but things like a rowing machine would be a no-no.
