Why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have not been talking on this board for very long, but I have been talking on other boards. They say that the RNY is not a gook procedure and that a lot of people die right after surgery are a little while after surgery. I want to hear about some sucess that some people have had.
Thanks

I'm a success
Almost 7 months out and 93 lbs gone forever. I disagree with a lot of people dying.. some do but the numbers are very small for the amount of people it does help. Suzy

Rory I will be honest and say RNY has its risk as any other WLS but I can assure you that not a lot of people die from having the RNY. They usually die from pre-existing conditions or complication assisociated with surgery but not the surgery itself. If you are considering having RNY I would suggest researching this surgery some more and doing some background checks on the surgeons you are considering. I hope you find the answer you are looking for and a peace of mind. Don't be a stranger.

Rory,
My surgeon has done over 1300 surgeries and has lost ONE...at that was because the guy went home and ate pizza the first day home. He was rushed back to the hospital and his heart failed on the table when my surgeon was trying to fix the mess he had made by eating pizza and breaking through his new pouch.
Just do your research and you will be fine!!

Did you know life has a 100% mortality rate?
Just by living in the US, 1% of the population dies each year.
Check out asbs.com The stats say 1-2% mortality rate for WLS. Those who do die are due to infections or other things that might not even be related. Each surgeon is different too. My surgeon's practice have done over 2500 procedures with 6 deaths. The mortality rate of surgeons who have done less than 200 is higher than those with more experience. There's a 13% mortality rate with heart bypass.
So what's in the numbers? Only you can decide how to intrepet them to fit your life.

Great points Marie! I figured it was worth it to try to improve my quality of life and Dr. C has awesome stats. Even having 3 kids, I was scared, but now I am living with them instead of losing their young years. We can play and do things without me being tired and embarrased.

Great thoughts Marie!
I'm going through the Center for Minimally Invasive & Weight Loss Surgery a Cedars Sinai; there are 4 surgeons in the practice and they have performed over 1500 procedures just in the last 3 years. They have had 3 deaths. One for a 68 year old man who had heart failure 8 months after surgery, one woman who was killed in a car accident 6 months after surgery, and one 40 year old woman who lived in a remote area and could not get to a hospital in time when she had a stricture.
I asked the surgeon who was giving the talk, "Why do you include the woman with the car accident in your stats on mortality?" and his answer was very close to what Marie said: "Life happens."
I agree with what other people have been saying. Do your research, ask specific questions on mortality and complications (I have pages and pages of stats from Cedars re: number of incidences of anything going wrong), make sure if there is ANYTHING in your medical history that might present a problem or complication, DON'T HIDE IT - make damn sure your surgeon knows.
And, oh yeah, whenever someone says, "Lots of people die from RNY," just the very word "lots" would make me question its veracity. Back up that "lots" with hard data and incidents

Amanda...I have to wonder, why someone would die from a stricture so quick. I was told that people go on with strictures for a while-as long as you can get fluids from liquid or IV, then you have lots of time to get to a doctor. - I would have to travel 2 days to get to my surgeon.

Life happens, and death is simply a part of life. As an MO, you will die MUCH sooner than if you were to have become healthy. This year in the US, MO will surpass smoking as the leading cause of death. Think about it - THATS scary!
