Default Lap?

When you say Lap, you mean laproscopically with a few small incisions, is that correct?

Then the other method is open with the big incision? How long does that take surgery wise?

Yes, when I say Lap it is a few small incisions. I'm not sure how long an open procedure would be, but I am guessing just a little longer as I believe the only difference is the sewing up time...the stuff they do on the inside is the same.

How long were you in the hospital? 2 days

How long did it take you to be able to return to work at a desk job? 10 days including the weekend

Did complications arise? Post Op pancreatitis 2 weeks after surgery-not sure why it happened....

What did your family do to help you? Nothing, Im a single mom I was able to care for my 2 sons, get them to school, etc..... I just stocked up on lots of frozen dinners!

Did you develop more kidney stones? I have read that on other sights? I never had kidney stones, but most folks get them as a result of staying properly hydrated after surgery, if you dont drink your H2o your bound to get them.

Did you have kidney problems before the surgery? None

Good luck on your journey!

I had open rny and and gall bladder removal, I went in on Tueday and left Sunday afternoon.
I am a teacher not really a desk job-but I took 5 weeks off
I was dehydrated in the hospital due to the bowel prep.
Passing out in the hospital.
No kidney problems before or after surgery.

ETA
I had someone with me in the hospital almost at all times, except at night. I recommend this, otherwise I would have been alone at bad times (passed out) also they often did not answer the call light-so my mom called the main line on the phone.

My open was approx 5-6 hours-everything went well with the actual surgery-no drains or bleeding.

Welcome! It's great that you're doing research for your husband. The more you know, the better!

Questions:
How long were you in the hospital? I was in the hospital for three days after my first surgery, and three days after the second surgery.
How long did it take you to be able to return to work at a desk job? I am actually unemployed at the moment, but I could have gone back to work after 5 weeks. Since I had two surgeries, my healing process was a bit slower than it is for some.
Did complications arise? Yes, the reason for the second surgery was that I had a major kink in the connection from my old stomach to where it empties into the intestine, and my stomach almost ruptured. The surgeons have no idea how it happened.
What did your family do to help you? My husband, mother, and mother-in-law all took turns staying with me and caring for me. It was wonderful to have so much help, and I really needed it!
Did you develop more kidney stones? I had two kidney stones pass in the year before my surgery, and I have had no kidney issues since the surgery.
Did you have kidney problems before the surgery? Yes, I have had kidney problems since I was 18 - I constantly get kidney and urinary tract infections, along with the two kidney stones I mentioned. But things have been fine since the surgery, and I hope it stays that way!

I hope that everyone's answers will help you through this! Good luck to you and your husband and children.
