Well while I am at a different Dr. mine does not require that. They said.. "gee if you could do that then you wouldn't need us now would you?"

There are those who say they have to be on a liquid diet for weeks ahead of time too, but my Dr. just has my on liquids the day before.

Bottom line is every Dr. is different and every insurance company is different. I think we just all realize that we have to do things their way to get this done.

I am still really new to the group but welcome aboard.

I'm way over yonder in Ohio, but mine never mentioned losing, nor did he warn not to gain. I too was on a liquid diet only the day before. They did tell us not to have caffeine or Ibuprofen beforehand.....maybe a week.....but can't remember.

I just got back from the dietician, and am not sure whether or not I will be on a liquid diet a few days before surgery yet ( I am with Dr. Klein in Torrance, CA), but will find out from the doctor when I meet with him. The dietician did give me a list of things to start doing 2-4 weeks prior to surgery which include: cutting out caffiene, cutting out alcohol, start the habit of not drinking 30 min beofre of after meals, starting the habits of eating tiny bites, starting the habit of eating protiens first, measuring, and more.

Each doc is differetn, and I wish you the very best of luck on your journey! Pleasepost to let us know how you are doing...

My Dr. didn't give me a specific number, but every appointment he wanted me to have lost some weight. He does it mainly to see some commitment to change old habits. Everybody is different. But, for me, it was easier to start making changes before surgery. Oh, and I was only on a liquid diet for 1 day before surgery.

I was first referred by my PCP to UCLA. That program wanted me to go through many hoops including weight loss. I dedicided that this was not the program for me and fought tooth and nail with my insurance company to get a referral to a different more patient centered program that did not require any hoops. I am soooo glad that I did.

Every program is different with how many days of liquid diet before surgery. Mine was 3 days of clear liquid. My sister's program was one day. If you have a choice of where to go, I would ask the program all of these questions and then some.

For me Dr Wittgrove did want me to lose 35 lbs before I had WLS but I got my date within a week of him telling me that so I didn't have time to lose that. It is always good to lose before you go in. It will only make things better. Good luck........

My only restriction was the day before surgery-a normal size breakfast, small lunch, and a very light early (before 6 pm) supper. The nclear liquids only until midnight.

Mine didn't require weight loss. He doesn't want you to gain, but he is not a monster and won't cancel you if you gained a few. He said we could have a last supper.....just not 30 of them.
