Default Getting fatter before the surgery! Feel lousy!

Ok, so my surgeon hasn't told me I have to lose anything before the surgery, but I'm sure he doesn't want me gaining!

Did any of you guys do this once you were approved? It seems like from stuff I've read everyone else does better before the surgery.

Me? I've been eating like there's no tomorrow. I should be working on getting my good habits going again right? Even though the Dr doesn't say I have to lose x lbs. before I can go...

Knowing me, I'm subconciously trying to wreck it somehow.

Anyway, has anyone else done this?

I gained 10 pounds from pre op weigh in to surgery day. The RNP wasnt thrilled, I got the stink eye but we still went ahead with surgery... I was so scared they were gonna reschedule it, luckily they didnt!

Lol, the stink eye! That woulda sucked if it had to be rescheduled over ten lousy pounds!

It doesn't feel like I'm really going to ever have this surgery, even though I was approved. I feel like I'm in some weird limbo-land, waiting for my life to start. Maybe that's why?

The surgeon said at our first meeting that if all goes well, I should be able to have it by mid-January. I wish it were sooner! I guess I'm holding up hope that they will call with a December date instead. That would be awesome.

One thing though, this recent weight gain has made me feel really crappy again (fatigue, sore knee joints, winded). It reminds me why I want/need to have this surgery. It seems I can feel semi-ok if I am under 220, but anything over that makes me feel lousy!

I honestly gained about 3 pounds before surgery but that was after I had lost 10 but gained back 3. Dont feel bad about gaining the weight. There is a lot of people who go through this grieving period and feel like everything is up for grabs because it might be your "last meal". Just try and get your mind ready for this whole process. It is a roller coaster ride. I hope all works out in your favor.

I am doing a combination. I am eating some of the yummy things that I will not be able to eat anymore, but I am trying to start to modify some habits. I am chewing thoroughly and slowing down. I am stopping when I feel full and sometimes if I take a break midway through the meal, I only eat one or two more bites. It takes a few minutes for your head to recognize your stomach is full. I am disgusted with some things that made me fat. I hate fast food right now. My surgery is Jan 4th and my surgeon does not require weight loss prior. He requires activity to get your endurance up and put you in better shape, but not pounds lost. I am sure the holidays will be a challenge and as my MD says, "you can have a last meal, but not 30 of them and don't do it right before surgery"

Good Luck

Default Weight loss before surgery.

My biggest fear was that I'd gain and they'd bounce me from
the program. I just did some small changes in my eating.
like having fruit and yogurt for breakfast instead of a double mocha
and a danish and I started drifting down. I made some changes in
lunch also and kept my dinners fairly normal except for the amounts.

It was agrravating that my primary's scale was showing me 10-15 pounds
lighter than at Doctor C's. Still, I drifted down 3-4 pounds Doctor C's so it became a non-issue.

A lot of my friends wanted to make sure I had my "last meal", but I didn't
have any major cravings, except for an onion bagel and cream cheese.

My actual "last meal" was a short stack at the Westside Cafe in Escondido.

I've already figured out what I'll be able to eat in the future at two of the places we are regulars at and pretty much from my two favorite drive thru restaurants also. The food will likely last me three to four days but I'll still get to go.

I know I've gained a few. And I think there is something to the grieving before surgery.

29 days to go...

I gained weight from my consult to my preop appt. Then the nurse said I had to lose 3lbs and do a liquid diet for 10 days before surgery to get rid of the weight and shrink my liver. Well I did 5 days liquid and cheated a few times but still some how lost 9lbs on surgery day.

BTW-I pigged out before surgery "the Feast"...

I gained right before my surgery too. Although its not good, a lot of people do it. It's what they call "last supper syndrome". I would say to just try and watch what you eat. The reason they dont want you to gain and if possible, lose weight, is because that will shrink the liver and make the surgery a little less complicated.

There's a great deal of "weight loss" in the couple days prior to surgery, due to the bowel prep, etc. My doctor was FIRM in the statement that if I didn't lose weight, no surgery. And if I gained back 1 pound, they would postpone the surgery.

This was the 2nd time I had surgery scheduled, the first time was with a different surgeon, who DIDN'T have these "rules". I am SO glad that I had this doctor do my surgery. He explained to me about the fatty liver, and that the liver is the 1st place to lose weight, AND the first place to gain it. When they are doing the gastric bypass, they are using metal instruments to move the liver around to access the stomach, etc. If you have gained weight, or have a more fatty liver, the chances are greater that the liver can "break" while being handled, and you can loose too much blood, and even die.

Armed with that knowledge, I lost 37lbs before surgery, and sailed through.

(Sorry this post is so lengthy, but no one had explained the liver situation to me before, and I appreciated the information! It sure helped motivate me to HELP me. ).
