Ideal Body Weight
I have been reading a lot lately on WLS. One of the things that keeps coming up is that with the RNY, you loose 50-70% of your weight that you need to loose. From this I read that you only loose a minimum of 1/2 of what you want or should loose. I have 150 lbs to loose, so the least I can expect is 75lbs. The book I am reading states that with RNY the success is very good and long term results are a weight gain of up to 10-15% of the weight you lost.
So, what I want to know is what percentage did you loose and have you kept it off.
Second, did you change your goal weight as you went along, because you either got to a point where you or the doctor were happy, or that you felt it was unrealistic.
I am 310 with BMI of 46.2 - my goal is 160lbs.

lisa,
your post is interesting because i lost all my weight. i actually lost too much but then evened out. i started out at 240. i was planning to get down to 135-140. i ended up going down to 118 which put me almost underweight. i then, after going to a nutritionist and being told i had to eat more or i would keep loosing, ended up at 135. that's where i seem to maintain at. i would like to drop 5 pounds, but i don't want to diet. i do know several people who do loose all their weight. i think it depends on what you eat, how healthy you eat, and your exercise routine.

I would be interested in hearing this also. I am close to being at my 50% of excess weight already......close to 10 weeks out. I was originally thinking a goal weight for me would be 135 or so. I am 5'1", but felt I was big boned and solid. As fast as I've lost makes me guess that I should actually be smaller than I was originally guessing? But I don't want to end up only 50-60 lbs down when all is said and done. My doc never talked about a goal weight with me. All I have is a paper they handed out that I think was from an insurance company.

You lose 50%-70% in the first year. I have to lose 150 or so lbs and I will most likly not do that in one year. I might lose 100 or so. Most people who have to lose 150-200 lbs do it in a 12-18 month time span. I also think some less experenced Doc's make pouch's larger than normal. Which might make you lose less weight. I think MOST people who have this done with a good experence Doc and have good aftercare along with the right diet and exercise will lose 95%-115% of their goal weight. Also when you do lose some go under and end up gaining a little bit back until they find their happy place!

My docs goal for me was 135-140. My personal goal was 150 and then as I started to lose i changed my mind to 145. Now, i'm at 143.5 I figure after the TT I should be closer to the docs goal than to mine. I have lost a 134.5 lbs. I'm thinking my final weight will end up being somewhere around 135. So I will have lost as much as I weigh. So I will have lost 100%+ of my excess weight.

Lost 100% of Goal Weight
Lisa:
I actually lost more than 100 percent of my goal weight, from 251 lbs. to 145 lbs. I went back up to my goal weight of 150 lbs. and I've maintained it for almost a year now. I set my goal weight based on my previous experiences losing weight and what I felt was an ideal weight for me. Kelly (my surgeon's nurse practitioner) actually thought I could lose more weight, but I was (and have been) comfortable with 150 lbs.
Good luck to you.

Amber,
That is so awesome!! Honestly, how often do you "break the rules" of post surgery diet? I don't want to be an extremist; I want to do things in moderation. But since I have no real experience at that I am curious how others do it and lose all their weight.

Dara,
I'm so proud of all of you success stories. You've worked so hard, and you stick around to help and encourage us. Same question of you......how much do you stray from the guidelines? Is it possible to learn to eat a bite of cake and then go about your day? Right now these things don't bother me, but does it get harder with time or easier?

I do my best to follow the major rule-Protein first. I can't have any sugar because i dump and as we all know that sucks. I'm lactose intolerant so that eliminates a lot of stuff for me. the worst things I eat are and this is rarely-popcorn (air popped with butter sprinkles every Sunday night) pretzels (zero fat 100 cals a bag can't eat the whole bag), s/f choclate pudding (I've had a 6 pack in my fridge for 3 weeks I've ate 2), and this is my big indulgence and I need to get off of them Cheese crackers with peanut butter. I eat lots of beef jerky, beans, steak, salads. I don't count calories or fat grams just protein. I eat when I'm hungry but usually at 2 pm, 8:30 pm, and 1 am (I work 2nd shift). Sometimes I skip the 1 am and eat first thing in the morning. I usually have a small snack around 6 pm at work (jerky, those darn cheese and peanut butter crackers, a piece of fruit). I don't crave junk so I don't eat it.

Marty:
Thank you for the kudos. There are certainly others who are at or below their goal weight, but don't post as often any more. I like to share whatever WLS wisdom I've been able to develop over the last 19 months to whoever will listen!
With regard to your question...I'm not so sure you want to hear my honest answer. It seems that the prominent theme running through posts lately is "everything in moderation." This is definitely a true statement, but I think it should be for those who are at least close to goal or maintaining. I think that newbies and pre-ops sometimes get the misconception that it applies to them and I don't think that's the best message at their point in their journey.
To be honest, I never deviated from my surgeon's guidelines for at least the first year. Weird but true. I believe this is one of the reasons I never threw up my food. I just didn't take chances. After surgery, food didn't mean enough to me to be sick. The first time I can remember starting to eat a few things outside the guidelines was this past summer. Geez, I feel like the nerd of WLS! LOL
Maintaining goal weight is something that must be a conscious effort, just like every other normal-weighted person. I know at this point, physically, I can eat anything I want. The only exceptions are way too much fat and way too much sugar. But, the important question is...do I want to do that on a regular basis? Probably not, because I want to remain a normal weight the rest of my life. So I CHOOSE not to deviate from what I have been taught will allow me to maintain.
When you get to the point where I am, it will be harder to resist things like cake. However, with the right mind-set, you will be able to take a bite or two of cake and be satisfied. And, thankfully, if you decide to eat the whole cake, your tool will still work and make you barf your guts out! LOL
Hey, I told you that you probably wouldn't like my answer! But there it is...my two cents.
