Default Another Fat Suit

Tonight on Entertainment Tonight another skinny mini goes undercover in a fat suit... Here is what the website says about it:

Vanessa Minnillo Goes Undercover

November 14, 2005

Sixty-two percent of the women in the United States are overweight, and now ET is exposing the real world they live in every time they step out of the house.

Our own VANESSA MINNILLO underwent a startling transformation for our cameras and went undercover on the streets of New York City as a 350-pound woman to get a reality check on the every day prejudices facing America's weight-challenged women.

"Turning myself into a 350-pound woman was eye-opening," says Vanessa. "I knew that I would be able to take the suit off at the end of the day, but I never knew just how much it would affect me the first moment I saw how I looked."

Vanessa's first destination was the Central Park jogging path to see how she would be treated as a heavy person trying to get a little exercise.

"It was one of the most uncomfortable moments of my life," reveals Vanessa. "There were quite a few moments I'll never forget from the morning, like when a group of Italian joggers ran by me and I heard them say, in Italian, "grasso," [which is] pretty easy to translate: gross, or fat. I knew this was not going to be an easy day."

And the construction workers weren't exactly giving any love either: "The men who usually whistle and screech at any woman who walks by were not only silent -- they practically broke their necks turning away from me."

"As someone in the public eye, I've dealt with my fair share of people staring at me," concludes Vanessa. "But for the first time in my life, I found out what it's like to have people turn away and avoid eye contact -- in fact, do everything in their power to steer clear. It was shocking. It was hurtful."

Watch ET for more of Vanessa's eye-opening experience -- and how her fat suit odyssey changed her for life!

What is up with the fat suit lately? I was in one for several years and I know first hand how people treat you. I also still feel like I'm MO inside. I still look at the ground instead of walking with my head held high. I have heard the rude comments and gotten the stares. Why don't they just interview or follow around some MO people to see what life is like for them? I know that these ladies feel like they are trying to see what our lives are like and to see how hurtful being MO can be, but I can't help but feel like they are kind of making fun of us. There are more obese people in this country than thin people so I can't understand why it is still okay to treat us like crap. I'm sorry I'm rambling on about this and I'm sure that I'm the only one who feels this way and this wasn't the intentions of the show! Just me being bitter and insecure!!!

Maybe instead of for a day, have them wear the suit for a week or a month...or 19 years.

Amber,

You are not the only one who feels that way. I find it offensive too. Sheesh.

I REALLY don't want to offend anyone on this forum, but I personally don't think any of these people who are putting on fat suits truly care about how we feel. They are not out to help people understand the plight of the fat person. They are not out to open people's eyes or shed some light on real life. They are THE MEDIA and they are out to get people to watch their broadcast. They know that most of America is overweight and they know those people will be watching saying, "Yeah, see what it's like... now you all really know how we feel! Maybe you'll treat us better now!" They are just out to get the viewers so their ratings go up. Isn't November a sweeps month? I don't think that's a coincidence.

Okay, cynical Traci is hoping you all will forgive her for her jaded view on this particular subject.

I agree with you 100%, Traci. I think it's all about ratings - nothing more.
