Question Getting pregnant? Sorta OT???

I often find myself thinking about life when I can't sleep at night. Last night I found it almost impossible to fall asleep because of what I was thinking.

What happens if I get pregnant? Will I be able to gain the weight without feeling seriously ill?

It made me worry because I've heard that if you over eat you get sick and vomit. Well what about when you get pregnant? Do I just have to slowly add an extra bite here and there to help expand my stomach size just a little? Or will my being pregnant cause me to eat more often, but without getting sick from over eating? Because I am soo looking forward to having a child a few years down the road. Thanks for reading.

This is a forum that Jamie Anda sp? started. She has a great web site too, I'll get that for you. http://freewill.tzo.com/~jamie/ She's had weight loss surgery and then became pregnant. She may be able to offer you some help with your questions.

Many women have gotten pregnant after WLS and had healthy babies. There are some modifications to maintain healthy eating for two. You would need to stay in close contact with your OB and nutritionist throughout your pregnancy. There was someone who recently posted here that has had a baby in the past few months. Perhaps you'll get a chance to hear from her.

Smile Pregnancy After WLS

Heather,

This surgery is just a tool to help you eat healthy and maintain a "normal" weight range. However, even when you are pregnant, you don't need a lot of extra calories. You can nourish a fetus without over eating or eating more often. That my dear is a myth. You don't really have to eat for two. I had a pregnancy in 2004 where I was pregnant with twin girls, (Courtney Rae & Lindsay Marie) subsequently losing them at 31 weeks from twin to twin transfusion syndrome. I only gained about 9 lbs throughout the pregnancy because I was very sick but that is not what caused the fetal demise, the doctor said that I didn't have to gain that much weight in order to maintain fetal health. You don't have to stretch the pouch. Many people who have the surgery end up having healthy babies. As a matter of fact, it helps people with fertility problems to end up getting pregnant. I don't know if this helps or not, but I know in my case.. as I am getting older I am anticipating hopefully having a family some day. Not anytime soon, of course, as I am just 5 months out.. but after I get married..

I am not worried at all about getting the nutrition needed to maintain a healthy pregnancy, as I will be far enough out to be able to get in the protien I need and could always supplement with a shake if needed. Don't worry you'll be fine when your time comes.

Good luck..

Default Don't Let Anyone Scare You

HI, I became pregnant 3 months post!!! I was luck and had lost the majority of my weight so nutritional issues weren't a biggie for me. I lost 75 lbs in those 3 months!!!! I then gained only only only 23 lbs and it was all baby only!!!! I looked great they said. Doctors TOLD me to ABORT and I took my healthy baby in to show him but he refused to see me what an idiot. At the time in 2003 there was very little research about the results of early pregnancy so I ignored their request to abort then they asked me if I was Catholic so that did it for me. I didn't see them unless I had to. I did fairly well. I had another baby 2 yrs later and unfortunately gained 50 lbs and still have the tummy and boobs to show it. OH well. But it is true you do NOT need to eat much more to sustain the baby that is a huge myth.
Also be careful with people who have not worked with pregnancy in post gastric women. They freaked on me and the nutritionist said I had to take double the vitamins , etc and it was not true at all. They also told me I would have to be eating all day long and I would be causing the baby trauma. What I kept telling them was that was all based on the unknown nutritional complications PRIOR to the MAJOR weight loss. I had already lost the majority of it but it does take the body over a year to get used to the new body and how to use the nutritional values you are adding to it.

So good luck and you will be fine!!!
