another new guy. Hi
Hi I'm Jdee 45 year old guy from Florida, looking at WLS.
I will be going to a seminar
this coming Wed. I don't have insurance,
and would have to pay with cash.
Has anyone here had to go that route?
I hope I can manage to have this done
for around 20k if its much
more than that I guess I'm outta luck.
My BMI is 48 .
Wish me luck, I hope they will talk to
a fellow without insurance.
Its nice to have a place like this to talk.
Family and friends sure don't want to hear
anything about it
Jdee

Welcome to the forum. I was covered by insurance so I don't know about the cash part. There are others here that had to go that route. I am sure you will hear from them. Good luck.

JDee, you make it sound like your surgeon will like you less becasue you are a cash patient. Believe me, coming from a medical profession background, we love cash patients. No insurance headaches, no approvals to wait for, no limitations and restrictions. If you have 20K, go to the seminar. Make your pre-op consult appointmet and meet your surgeon. Speak frankly with him, tell him your financial limitations, and strike a deal! I mean it. Do not be afraid to ask for a cash discount, referral discount...whatever. Tell your surgeon you will do whatever it takes to have this surgery, but your top $20K....can he help you.
And also, welcome to this board. We love making new friends.

That's great advice, Linda!
And JDee, I know it can be discouraging when family and friends don't respond well to this subject, but you've got a great new group of friends that will talk with you as much as you could ever want! There are many people here who had to pay cash for some or all of their surgery, so you are definitely not alone there either.

Wow thanks for the fast response.
I'm feeling better about this already.
I'll let you know how I make out next week.

Welcome!! And you know how you always get a better deal when you offer cash.... like at a car dealership! Hopefully this goes the exact same way! Good luck!

Welcome to the board. I am in Ohio and we have a surgeon in town that offers it for about $20,000. The place I went always mentions $30,000, but it was never said as an actual quote. Maybe you can shop around a bit. I would have found a way to pay if insurance had said no. Good luck and do not give up on your goal!!

Welcome to the forum...what part of florida are you in and who is the surgeon you are looking at. I am taking the cash route as I don't want to wait the years of run around. Besides, the surgeon I want to have perform my surgery will not accept it sooooo...It is more important to have a competant surgeon than one on the plan. I am in Jupiter and using Jerfferson Vaughan. I am very familiar with most of the "bariatric sugeons" in the area so if you need any advice...please do not hesitate to ask.
