Default Weight Gain????????

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering about weight gain early post op. I have been weighting every day (I know, weekly is better) and the initial couple of days dropped 7 pounds. I am assumming that it is water weight. After that it's been a steady pound to 1.5 pounds per day. Yesterday I weighed 323.2 and today I weighed 324.2. How can I gain a pound when I am drinking protein shakes and soup? Here is my diet yesterday: 4 oz Protein shake w/milk
1 cup of chicken broth ( from Quiznos)
2 cups egg drop soup ( over 4-6 hours)

Am I just stressing?? I did walk over a mile yesterday and sipped all day. Any suggestions??? Thanks

Jim,

NOT TO WORRY... that happened to me too. When I first weighed I weighed more than I did when I went in for the surgery (fluid). Then I lost but kept going up and down in weight a pound or two every day or so. Crazy. Believe me that will stop. It lasted for about 10 days. Now, I'm losing a pound a day.

Jim,
I know its hard not to go on that darn scale. But Im telling you and Im sure most will tell you to STEP AWAY FROM THE SCALE.It will drive you insane.I got so bad I was on it more than once a day in the beginning. If it went up on pound I would freak.
I can tell you in the first six months you WILL drop the weight. It WILL come off.One week I could lose 12lbs then only 2 the next.So give yourself some time.I know its easier said then done, believe me
You'll do fine.I weigh myself once a week, some say only do it once a month. But I would suggest measuring yourself. You can lose many inches without losing pounds.I was stressin over the darn scale a couple months back,it wouldnt move,I measured myself & I lost over 20inches in 3mo.So if the scale doesnt move your still losing.
Good Luck!

I am almost 3 months out and I still go up and down. That is why they tell us not to weigh ourselves every day (although I am anal so I weigh myself twice a day). While I usually go down, there are some days when my body will retain everything, and will gain a pound or two, I will keep at that weight for 3-5 days, and then I will loose 5 pounds in one day. Every body responds differently, but that is my experience. So don't worry.

Jim:

First of all, I agree with what everyone has said. Do NOT stress over the scale. Weight fluctuations will happen. Most people lose weight in spurts, not consistently. And, if you follow your program, you WILL lose weight--GUARANTEED.

Now, that said, something in your post jumped out at me that makes perfect sense. You're taking in very little nutrition, other than your protein shake. The only other two items you ate yesterday are busting with SODIUM. Think about what happens when we ingest a lot of sodium--we retain FLUID. I really believe this is the source of your miniscule weight increase.

No worries, Jim. I think your fluctuation was caused by fluid retention from sodium intake.

Believe us, it will COME off! Now...STOP STRESSING, buddy!

Default Don't Worry

Jim
I'm almost 6 months out and I still am compulsive and stepon the scale everyday. I also go up and down and stay the same. I eventually go down a little bit and then do the same thing of going up and down again. If I only weighed once a week it would probably not be so frustrating.
Hang in there! You'll keep losing.

Default me too!

Two days after surgery I found a scale hidden under a desk on the ward at the hospital, of course, me being me, I snuck into the office and stepped on the scale. Man was I peeved to see it had gone up! What a let down! But the nurse who caught me sneaking back out nicely informed me that I shouldn't weigh myself till me post op visit and then I would be suprised. Course I heeded that advice for about 5 minutes. But...suffice it to say it does go up and down. No worries.

Ya cant "mess up" your first 6 months, so totally relax.

The scale: How often did you step on it pre operatively? Probably only at Dr's offices when you HAD to, thats they way i continued to weight post operatively. The way I see the scale, when you step on it and your numbers are up it tells you, you arent good enough today, when you step on and the numbers are down it tells you, you werent good enough yesterday. Its just a very bad thing.

Yes Julia, if I knew how obsessive you were I would have snatched it, if Jim didnt live so far away I would snatch his too! I do have his wifes cell #, I could call her and assess and scalenapping! lol
