I Talked with the "Half Ton Man"
There is a discussion thread talking about the documentary "Half Ton Man" on The Learning Channel yesterday. I wanted to start a new thread and and share the conversation I had with him - Patrick Deuel, earlier today.
When Patrick was taken to the hospital, his weight was recorded at 1,072 pounds. When the documentary was made, he was down to roughly 600 pounds. For those unaware of this man, they had to tear down the wall to his bedroom to get him out, and use heavy duty equipment to get him in the ambulance and take him to the hospital. His complications included apnea, high blood pressure, and diabetes, all from his weight. The doctor immediatly placed him on a 1200 calorie diet. The problem was he needed to lose weight before they could perform wls. They had to perform the open procedure as he was still to heavy for the laprosocpic procedure.
Talking with him was interesting. His blood pressure is for the most part, under control, and he's down to ALMOST 400 LBS. He said he does have quite a bad stomach "overhang" and the doctor will indeed remove the excess skin after he loses some more, although the doctor didn't say exactly how much more. He's been taking extra care to ensure the folds are cleaned, he's very much concerned with skin disease because of the overhang.
Patrick is a very friendly and cheerful, country "good ol' boy". He's walking more, and looking forward to when he can drive again. He said that wls is the only way to go - "after all, it saved my life!" I told him about myself, and what I'm going through. He encouraged me to get to the doctor about the apnea (he's still on the machine), before it becomes worse.
He also invited me to speak with his doctor, which I think I will do. By the way, his doctor also had wls!
I'll be talking with him again real soon!

I read an article about him on the internet. I think I may have posted about it. I didn't know a person could weigh that much. I'm glad to hear he is doing well and I hope his success continues. If you speak with him again, invite him to come here and chat. I'm sure he has some great insight on wls.

Baron I think that is so great that you where able to speak with Patrick. God places people in our lives for a reason, hopefully that reason will lead you to the losing side. I know it has been a struggle for you and I have been rooting for since day one. Thanks you for sharing.

Yep. There are so many articles about Patrick, it was easy to find out the city and state where he lives. I simply did a google address lookup - listed his street address and phone number.
It's getting way to easy to find things on the internet!

What's his name, and last known address? what does he do for a living, where did he last work?
By the way I did a rough BMI on Patrick. He's almost 6 feet tall, so that's what I went with. At his top weight, his BMI was 145.4.
Now, at about 450 lbs., his BMI is 61.
