I did not have one. I'm not sure why it would be needed. If your surgeon is recommending it, I'd ask why. I don't mean to suggest it's not necessary, I just mean it's good to know why they recommend things.

I wasn't told I needed to have one by my insurance company, but low and behold just yesterday they tried to throw me a curve ball and suddenly needed test results from an EGD (Endoscopy aka Upper GI) and a TSH (Thyroid) when they didn't tell my PCM or myself when we called about what was required. The awesome thing was that I already had both of those tests, so I could provide them with what they are requesting. They wanted to make sure I didn't have Peptic Ulcer Disease (which I don't...whew). Good luck with getting to that final approval and and upper GI is easy peasy!

I had to have an EGD and they found gastritis and an ulcer. They had me take some meds before surgery. I may be supposed to take them now too, but i dont. I am a rebel...they know i am not taking them. It made me sick post op.

I had to have one. It's a good thing too, because my awesome surgeon found a not-so-awesome hiatal hernia to repair during my RNY. It could have gone undiscovered until it caused problems resulting in a 2nd surgery if he had not required this endoscopy.
