Default Pre op appointments done, switched to RNY

Hi everyone. I am moving over to this side of the message boards. When I started my quest in July I set my mind to having lap band and put off the surgery until January when I found out that I have the option to get the sleevesurgery done. Today I made changed my mind to rny. My date is set for 2/24 at Kaiser SSF. I wanted to like the sleeve and for a while was completely sold on it. The thought or re routing the hardware was disconcerning. After speaking with my doc I believe my best option is the rny. The lack of long term results and the possibility of failed results played part on this choice. My doc uses a 40 bougie tube. I did not think this would give me enough restriction needed to drop all the weight I want to lose. So, back to my binder and research on what preparations I need to make. Time will pass quickly, can't wait to kick this into the next gear.

I did the same thing. I was planning on Lap Band the entire time I was going through my pre-op appointments. On the day I was to sign all the release forms, I asked to switch to RNY. They had me fill out a different form and said they would let me know if the change would require a new surgery date. It didn't. I am soooo very glad I did it. I thought, you know, if I'm going to do this, I might as well go all the way and do the one that makes the weight loss "easier" (eventhough everyone on here knows there is no easy way, but you know what I mean). I am 10 months out and down 100 pounds. That may not be as much as some have lost in the same amount of time, but I'm 25 pounds to goal and am very happy with the results. A friend had lapband about 3 weeks before my RNY and has only lost about 50. She is a food addict like me and is just not able to do it with just restriction. I NEED the fear of dumping and malabsorbtion to keep me focused on what's going in and if it's good for me. I am so very happy with the decision!!

The 24th will be here before you know it! Good luck on your journey!

I, too, started of committed to the band. At the request of my surgeon, I began to look more closely at RNY and decided it was best for me. I'm 3 weeks post op and totally happy that I did it.

Congratulations to both of you on your upcoming surgeries.

j1sdw01, I think what you're referring to is Heprin. It's a blood thinner.

I had the band for 3 years before revising to RNY. Best decision I ever made. Good luck to both of you and I wish you a very speedy recovery.

I am working through my approval stages now and hope to have RNY in March. My doctor has advised me I will need to do the shots in my stomach to prevent bloodclots after I get home from the hospital. I am 57 yrs old. I believe that is one of the reasons.

It's probably Heparin or Lovenox that you have to take. I had to take Plavix (in pill form, not shots) post-op to prevent blood clots.
