Protein, protein, protein..(not protein powder)
HI everyone...i'm only 3 weeks post op and still on soft foods. i was wondering what proteins you can eat and digest easily and which ones you have a hard time eating and digesting????? i wonder what it would be like to eat pork, chicken, squid, shrimp, lobster, crab legs...i'm afraid to even think of trying red meat (read too many stories of it getting stuck..ugh).
thanks
mina

Beans. Refried or otherwise. I think pretty much any meat at three weeks would be hard to digest. Though I have tried chili with some ground beef and it was fine.

I initially had a problem with salmon, but that didn't last long. Everything else, tuna, pork, chicken, beef, clams, shrimp, lobster, etc. went down easy. If anything got stuck it was because I didn't chew enough.

chicken and pork are probably a lot more likely to get stuck than something made from ground beef.
but if you're not on solid foods yet (and I don't think I was on solids until like a month and a half out), I'd recommend cottage cheese, greek yogurt (get the unflavored and add your own sugar-free jelly), lactose-free or soy milk, or cheese.
I ate a ton of fish before I trusted my pouch enough for chicken. now I eat a pretty decent mix (dinner tonight was smoked salmon sashimi with a chicken skewer side)

Well, I don't eat meat at all. I did well with veggies burgers and the like pretty early out, though. And I ate a lot of ricotta cheese with spaghetti sauce and refried beans and other beans. I also recommend Greek yogurt. Cottage cheese is another good source of protein, but I don't really care for it.

I lived on refried beans with low-fat cheddar cheese during the pureed phase! When I moved on to chicken and fish, I stewed them in a combination of chicken broth and sugar-free salsa. It kept the meat very moist and that was easier to tolerate. Good luck!

I am three months out and I can eat ground beef in chili, beans and split peas in soups, cheese, crab meat in crab cakes, lobster meat. Just having regular beef or chicken is too dry and it comes back up on me

I know a lot of people, even Band people who can not eat meat-ever.
Chicken is pretty tough for most people and my Gastro Dr. even told me it was too hard and I should avoid it.
If you are dying for meat, I agree, meat in chili is the best way to get it. And oddly enough, Wendy's small chili has under 200 calories and 15 grams of protein and it is tasty.
Cheese is an excellent protein, Cabots makes several low fat and very excellent cheeses.
And Greek yogurt is fabulous-gives seafood a run for the money on protein.
I have tried seafood, still can't do it and I am 3 and a half months out.
