Sleep Study????
Hello,
Has anyone had a sleep study??? I am having one in a week and was wondering what is involved. I don't really know if I have sleep apnea, although I do snore something fierce. Thanks
I never realized how much was involved with getting the WLS. Sleep studies, psych appointments, dietician, seminars, etc. Wow, what a process.

It's Totally Painless, They Hook You Up To A Few Monitors And They Monitor How Much Oxygen Your Getting, As Well As Your Breathing. They Take A Base Line And Then Decide If You Need Cpap Or Not. If Its Just An Overnight Oxcemitry Test, Thats Even Easier. Cuff On The Finger And Your Off To Sleep. Dont Let Anyone Scare You With The Cpap, They Suck Yes, But Not Entirely Horrible. Good Luck

Sleep Study
Jim:
I had a "self-service" sleep study at home. I picked up the equipment and received instructions, took it home, attached it myself at bedtime, took it off the next morning, and returned it to the doctor's office the next day. It was great! I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea, which means it was basically caused by all of the fat around my neck. When I started wearing all of the head gear at night associated with the CPAP machine, I finally decided that WLS was the only solution for me.
All of the pre-op testing is good, because you want to make sure everything is thoroughly checked out before resorting to such drastic measures as WLS to lose weight!
Good luck with your study.

RE: Sleep Study
There are two kinds of sleep studies as roachome mentioned. Depending on what is ordered, and what equipment is available, it is sometimes done at a sleep center or at home. I had mine at home and while it was a little uncomfortable with all the wires I had attached to me it was no big deal. From my point of view, it was better than being watched in a sleep center!

I had my done at a sleep center twice! Once to see if I had apnea and one with the CPAP. I hated them both! I was suffering from a major case of broncitis with the first study and only got two hours of sleep and had a whole day of pre op tests the next day. I was miserable. Then after the second one with the CPAP (two weeks before wls) the doc said he would deny my surgery if I didn't buy the CPAP from him and his company. My primary intervened and told the bully to back off. I don't even snore at all anymore. Apnea is gone! I just had a bad experience due to the people involved and being sick and all.

I had a sleep study done in a sleep center. They hooked me up to a bunch of monitors and then I tried to sleep. I didn't sleep as well there as I do at home, of course. Found out I had sleep apnea and that with my BMI helped me qualify for surgery.

Well, in the end because I was already approved with the insurance, my surgeon scheduled me and didn't ever mention the CPAP. My primary doc called and got the prescription for me from the sleep study and told them I could purchase it anywhere I wished to and they had no right to try to strong arm me into buying from them. He said the surgery should make the apnea disappear so there was no sense in buying it to use for just a little while unless I felt that I needed it or wanted it. I couldn't sleep with that darn thing on and if I had got it I wouldn't have used it. I also couldn't see having the insurance pay for a piece of equipment to help with a problem that was related to obesity and also pay for we to have wls. That just how I looked at it. I really thought I was treated pretty badly by thr sleep center all in all.

I had a sleep study done in my home with a machine they send. May I recommend that anyone doing this make sure you tape all your wires down I had to do this three times. SIGH Anyway I found out I had restless leg syndrome, and not sleep apnea. Go figure Suzy
