Default thyroid

Does anyone know if having a thyroid problem (mine is underactive and I take med. for it) will have an impact on losing weight after wls? Will it make it more difficult?

I am 2 months post op and am down 40 lbs. I have on synthroid since 2006. My PCM and surgeon both agreed that being hypothyroid wouldn't stop me from losing and that I might even be able to decrease the dose of my meds one day.

I, too, have been on Synthroid for almost a year. I had my surgery almost 3 mos. ago and I've lost 50 lbs. so the medication is not a problem. I had also discussed this with my surgeon beforehand. You should be fine.

Did your dosage of synthroid stay the same or did it need to be increased? I was wondering if we have trouble absorbing prescription meds after surgery.

Default No thyroid

I haven't had a thyroid for nearly two years. Had my Lap RN-Y a month ago and have lost 20 pounds so far, so it doesn't seem to be an issue.

HI
I have been on Armour thyroid from the age of 18 months to the age of 28 years when I was put on synthroid! I never had problems losing weight...just keeping it off!

Thyroid hormorne replacements do the exact same thing that the thyroid hormones that are secreted by your thyroid do! So if you've been on replacement therapy for awhile...there should be no problem losing weight.

I weight 212 on the day I made the decision to have my gastric bypass (I'm 5'1" and have a small frame). That day after my first weight in...I was determined to prove that I could lose weight and I did. I lost a total of 24 pounds presurgery (surgery was 11/11/09)...and I now weight 175.

I think as long as you take your thyroid medication as prescribed and your doctor keeps a close check with blood work...you'll lose weight just fine!

My meds have stayed the same so far. I go next month for 3 month blood work and will have it checked.

Just had my blood checked last week. I'm on 2 meds to replace Armour Thyro because they aren't making it right now and the dosages have and will stay the same.

I'm down 40 lbs in 2 months so I don't think it's affecting the way I lose weight post op!

I too am on Synthroid and I'm very nervous about losing at a slower pace.

I just had my thyroiod removed in June and they still don't have me levels where then should be. I am hoping that by the time I have my surgery in December that we will at least be close to where my levels should be.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with thyroid issues here and the those of you who also are on synthroid have also been successful with losing weight after WLS.
