I have a question...2 week post-op
Hello. I have a question. Why is it that you must be on a liquid diet 2 weeks after gastric bypass surgery? What is the purpose of this? If I feel like I can try some solids, is it going to hurt anything??? Just wondering. Im sure someone out there has an answer.

Because your new pouch is still going to be healing, and you don't want to make it work very hard while it heals.
Honestly, you won't really want to push it - I didn't. Want to, that is.

Think of it as a brand new baby's tummy. It's small, new, and really needs to heal up good. You will get past this : )

Yes, it's because your pouch is healing. It is important to stick to your doctor's diet.

What can happen if you do eat solid foods this soon? Do you know?

You could explode.
I imagine you could rupture the staple line.
Nothing good. Don't do it. And honestly, you won't really feel tempted to do it, I don't think.

I suppose if you ate too much, you could actually rupture the staple line. In reality, I doubt that is likely to happen. And the truth is, some docs start people on solid food much sooner than others. I was allowed pureed food at one week post-op. In Europe, it is common for them to serve you pureed food in the hospital after your surgery. Most people don't die from it.
However, you might get stomach pain, and you might vomit. Many people who try to eat solid food too soon don't tolerate it well. You really will do better if you give your pouch time to heal.

Be careful challenging your doctor's methods. He's done this many more times than you have. IMHO you are sabotaging your success by trying to cut corners here and there. As for me, I'm going to follow everything to the letter because I want the best absolute outcome. Sacrifice, yes... but this is about lifestyle change. If a person doesn't think they can manage the first couple weeks' change - how do they think they'll manage the rest of their life? No offense intended - just my 2 cents worth.
