Exclamation lap band Vs. RNY

I have been overweight for over half of my life. I am finally tired of it. I discussed the possibility of having Weight loss surgrey with my primary care physician. And he thought it was probably a good idea, and that I was an appropriate candidate.

I personally thought that people who had weight loss surgery were copping out. Not doing all it took to lose the weight...But now I am that person considering surgery because despite my best efforts I am losing the battle. The breaking point for me is the fact that I am infertile and my lifes goal has always been to have children. My ob/gyn told me point blank, after failed infertility cycles- nothing is going to work for you unless you lose 100 pounds. I was shocked. I have never been so insulted in all of my life. I was only covered with a paper sheet, completely exposed and my health and goals were in the hands of someone who could be so cold...
But she was right. Completely right. My hormones cant keep up with my ever increasing weight.

So I started researching surgical options. I was pretty sure that the lap band system was going to be my shot at happiness. But so many places are not offering it anymore. I cant find any information on why it is not being used. I know progress and weightloss is slower with it than with a GBP. But I cant find the reason why no one is recommending it or even doing it anymore.

That being said, I now need to find another solution. I have looked at the info pages of this site, but was wondering if there were any other good sites that any of you recommend for background information on a gastric bypass. Its time, I HAVE to do something, I just want to make sure that this is the right decision for me. Any help is appreciated.
Aunny!

Hi Aunny! Welcome! Most of us on this board had surgery with Dr Potts or Dr Callery and they dont do the band, the dont recoomend it. Their feeling, theres not enough long term research about it.

The real great thing about RNY GBP is it keeps you on track.. you cant losen anything like you can with a band, RNY GBP keeps you accountable to how much you eat, how much sugar, carbs and fat you eat, banding doesnt not. Personally, I LOVE THAT I DUMP. Keeps me in check and I cant have an "oh well I ate one, I messed up the diet Im just gonna eat the wohole box and try again tomorrow" attitude... it keeps me on track.

It took me 5 years to embrace GBP and see that it was for ME. Its definitely not for everybody.
One person here that stinks in my mind that would be a great person to talk to on a personal level is POKey757 ot is ot POKEY 575.. I dunno anywho look under Pokey is member list. She was the biggest skeptic.. read all the threads strated by her, she asked so many questions.. she wasnt surethis was fir her, then she was, then she wasnt...I think her story, her threads are a great learning tool for anyone who wants the surgery, or is at least thinking about it but has fears......
Anything we can help you with. let us know.. and once again! Welcome!

Aunny, Obesityhelp.com is a good site for info on the most common surgeries.
Good luck on your journey. I've decided on RNY because of the results and the great reputation of the surgens, Dr. Callery and Dr. Potts. This is the only one they are currently doing. Welcome to the board.
