Question What's considered soft and mushy

I have been reading alot of the posts on here and I am curious what is considered soft and mushy. My doc said anything you can throw in a blender and make soft and mushy? So to me that seems like any kind of meat wouldn't count as its not mushy right? I have seen some people say they are eating chips is that ok? Then people say shrimp but that is more a solid food them something for the soft and mushy stage, don't you think? I am just getting tired of soup, cottage cheese, refried beans etc. I went to Joes crab shack last night w/ my inlaws and they all got shrimp and I wasn't sure what to get except the clam of chowder soup. I went ahead and got crab legs and smashed the meat up as small as I could and I did ok with it but is that really considered mushy? If I would of know I could eat shrimp shoot I would have.

Anyways I'm rambling so what do you consider soft and mushy. And my heart goes out to anyone who had to be on liquids for more than a day. My doctor allows soft and mushy 2nd day post-op.

I'd stay away from blending everything. It's yucky and can lead to poor habits later. It's easier to eat more food if it's blended vs in natural state. Anything than you can chew well or melts easily in your mouth is soft. All seafood is considered soft. Except clams, too stringy. Chicken that's cut up well is soft too, like in a chicken salad. If it's cooked moistly and you can remember to chew well, a chicken breast is okay. Pork and beef tend to be to "stringy" for people early post-op because of the connective tissue. But, if you like steak tartare or carpaccio, then you can have some red meat. All cooked veggies are acceptable. Fruit with the skin removed is okay. The skin on most fruits is had to digest. Hard, dried chips and crackers are okay. No bread yet, as it will swell up and block things. I think we all love chips and salsa.

I could live on chips and salsa LOL! What kind of crackers? Like saltines or ritz etc.? Do they make you thirstier though? Thanks for the response Tina

I have had saltine crackers. Yes, they do make you thirstier but if you put peanut butter on them or even cheese then they are OK. I have also had Wheatables. I don't eat too many crackers though. maybe 1 saltine, or 1-2 wheatables, because they are just straight carbs. I did go to a party last night (oh did I feel out of place with my water bottle, while everyone else had beers) where I had 2 tortilla chips and 1 potato chip. (bad!)

Marie is right, shrimp and all seafoods are soft foods. But I tried to eat shrimp a few times now and it is really hard to chew well. I usually give up and spit it out. Yuck! Same goes for lobster. But I have had salmon and different whitefish, and those are really easy to chew well.

At the Nutrition meeting I'm pretty sure Kelly said if you chew it up enough so it's a liquid in your mouth BEFORE you swallow it, you should be okay.

I eat chips and salsa all the time. It's quite yummy..I know it's bad for you, but I do not eat many at a time.

Salsa is very good for you. However, you need a method to get it to your mouth. Chips aren't bad. If you get the baked versions. It takes like 20 chips to make a single serving. Early post-op, it's very difficult to eat that much. I think I could only handle 4-5 with lots of salsa.

for me the best thing about our diet is seeing the results, the worst is the food choices we have, especially early on. it does get better however. cooked vegies are soft, so is chili. wendys has really good chili. canned meats like chicken are ok. if you have a crock pot, do a roast if you can shred it with a fork your probably ok. also nonsugar jello is really easy, i think you can also put some nonsugar whipped cream on it as well. there is some low carb pasta out that if you watch how much of it you eat you can do it as well. good luck
