Default Grocery list? anyone?

OK... I know this is probably gonna sound stupid, but I'm a 22 yr old, 9 months out, and I have decided that I need to go grocery shopping and start cooking! *I don't cook! lol*

DO ANY OF YOU HAVE A SUGGESTION OF THINGS THAT I SHOULD ALWAYS KEEP IN MY KITCHEN? that I could use w/ several recipes? please?

I'm in desperate need of help here, I don't cook! but I'm gonna try and start! If I don't, I'm afraid that I'm gonna slowly start to gain back all my weight..I haven't started gaining or anything yet, I just don't wanna get in ANY bad habits!

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH
hugs.

Its not that I have been eating anything bad for me, or over eating, or anything like that.. I was just wanting to learn to cook actual meals, I was reading the recipes on here and decided that maybe I could do this. I wanted some ideas on things like spices, sweetners, cheeses, etc. that went w/ several of the recipes.

Just a word of warning- if you buy BBQ sauce, look for sugar free. You may dump on the regular.

Hi there... I'm not post-op, but I do have some easy kitchen staples that you should add to your pantry.

Bouillon crystals or cubes (that way, you don't have to keep whole cans/containers of broth on hand)
White meat boneless chicken (I always have a package in the freezer... get the individually frozen breasts - easier to cook for one!)
canned tomatoes (seasoned - one for mexican with chiles (I like RO-Tel) and one with italian seasonings)
shredded cheese (lowfat or nonfat - 4 cheese mexican (not with the seasonings in it) and mozzarella)
cottage cheese
Dried Minced Onion easily subs in most recipes that call for real onion, and spices up anything else nicely.
Minced garlic -usually found in the produce section in a jar to be used whenever garlic is needed, and no need to keep fresh on hand.
Paul Prudhomme's Hamburger Magic like a seasoned salt for beef/turkey burger. YUM.
Italian seasoning Also in the spice section - a great one-bottle mix for anything italian - pasta/chicken/pizza type stuff
Individual packages of Tuna in water good for protein! Easy to use if you get the packets over cans (no draining)
Fat Free Evaporated Milk good for sauces with cheese
Fat Free Cream of Mushroom and Cream of Chicken soups good for sauces for beef, chicken, tuna, and pork

So, that's what I can think of for now... I'm not good for post-op recipes, but I can help you learn to cook!

Hi sweetums.. so I'm really slow on the reply but enjoyed our chat the other night!

Go over to the 'What did you eat today/yesterday' thread started by Sherry7 and read through it.. (it's LOOONG) however, it has some good info on what kinds of foods people are eating. Make a list of some of the things you see that you'd like to try, and include who the poster was.. then contact them to find out the details.. I'm sure most would be happy to help you out.

Also, go to the nutrition section and take a look at the recipe section. There is a sticky post that will detail the recipes that have been posted, at the very top of that section.. scan through those and see what ones interest you there.

For me the following are must haves:

Fage 2% plain
Kashi Honey Almond Flax cereal
Splenda
Coffee (decaf)
Tea (decaf)
Hazelnut SF syrup (I prefer Toroni vs. the Davinci)
shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese (Low Fat)
cabots chipotle cheddar cheese
Salsa- mild & spicy
ground chicken or turkey (white meat)
Fat Free sour cream
garlic
cumin
chili powder
onions
scallions (aka green onions)
italian seasonings (oregano, basil, parsely)
sugar free popsicles
broccoli (fresh if possible)
green beans (fresh if possible) otherwise frozen (I NEVER USE CANNED veggies other than the ones listed below!!)
Canned crushed tomatoes (with and without green chilies)
Canned pureed tomatoes
Canned tomato paste
Northern Beans
Kidney Beans
Eggs

Those are my must haves.. The two most important are Fage yogurt & Kashi cereal. Everything else is flexible.

There are some really good lists in this thread already, but I would add a few items:

Lowfat or nonfat cottage cheese - good by itself or in a variety of preparation options (Milady B put some cottage cheese pancake recipes in the Recipes section that people rave about)

Chili fixins that you can throw into a crock pot before work and enjoy when you get home - put into individual containers and freeze for easy meals - check the Recipes section (Duckie has a very popular recipe for a Wendy's-type chili; Sherry has a delicious white bean and chicken chili) - some suggestions would be different beans - pinto, kidney, white, etc.; your preferred proteins - ground turkey, ground or shredded beef, ground or shredded cooked chicken breast, Morningstar Farms soy crumbles, Bob's Red Mill textured vegetable protein, etc.; veggies - onions, tomatoes, green chilis, hot peppers, etc.; seasonings - chili powder and spices, salt & pepper, hot sauce, etc.

Lowfat string cheese and other lowfat cheeses - you can slice and put these on a glossy (Dixie-type) paper plate in the microwave for about 2 minutes (time needed varies by preferences, type of oven and type of cheese - experiment!) and microwave into crispy "cheese cookies" that you can eat alone or use as cracker bases to put healthy toppings on. Pat the "cookies" with paper towels when you slide them off the paper plate to remove excess grease...

I've been looking over these grocery lists...I'm almost 10 months out and to be honest, my food selection has been pretty limited. Looking at these lists I realize I've been living off of:
Fat Free Yogurt (I add protein powder)
Stawberries
Raw Spinich
Low Fat Mozzerella Cheese
Salt free Almonds or Sunflower seeds
Occasional can of V8 (as a treat!)

I've been trying to incorporate more things like eggs, chicken, beef, pork and fish in my diet....but they just don't sit well for me. Even eating only small amounts, well-chewed, they sit like a brick in my stomach for seemingly forever!

I can't figure it out, before I was able to eat eggs, chicken, fish, etc...not a lot, but it seemed to sit okay. Now I can't tolerate any of these very well.... a semi 'vegan' diet seems to suit my pouch the best.
