Question Anyone gain weight while in the hospital having surgery??

This is my first post. I have read almost everything on this forum the past seven months during my journey. My surgery was Tuesday, June 30th. I am just rattled by what I'm dealing with. I need to see if anyone else has had this happen.

Okay I weighed 226 before my week of liquid diet.
The day of surgery my scale and hospital showed 219, great lost 7 pounds!
Left the next day Wednesday mid day headed home. I kept feeling like there was fluid in my tummy and it was swollen. Dr and nurses assured me it was normal gas.

I get home, go straight to bed, and wake about 7:00. I get up and instantly can tell my stomach is HUGE. I mean exactly like I looked at 9 months pregnant. It felt full of fluid. I got on the scale, and I weighed 228!!!!!

OMG, I thought yea I look like I'm carrying all that in fluid in my tummy.
How can I gain 9lbs in one day on nothing but ice chips and isopure????

So, I called the doc, and he said go to ER cause it could be a bowel leak. They do a cat scan, and everything was normal. Only tiny bit of fluid they didn't get from surgery at my pelvis, perfectly normal. Shrugged their shoulders and sent me home.

I have read almost everyone's story on here and youtube, and everyone talks of losing weight in the hospital. I'm 3 days post-op with a stomach bigger and weighing more than before I had the surgery, and I've been on liquids almost 2 weeks.

If anyone else has had this problem, please let me know this is not abnormal. I am ticked!

I'm pre-op, but wanted to answer because it's slow on the boards today.

From what I've seen on here it's PERFECTLY normal to gain weight while at the hospital (glad they confirmed everything was okay at the hospital for your own sanity though!)

Some people don't lose anyhting for the first week because of all the junk that was pumped into them.

Hang in there and welcome to TT!

One week before surgery I was 268. Started liquid diet.
Day of surgery I was 260.
Day after surgery I was 268 again.

I didn't notice that my tummy was bigger or anything. The nurses said my weight gain was from all the fluid from the IVs a stuff. Just a couple days later and the pounds were falling off.

Give it a few days, maybe, but listen to your body too. If you feel something's wrong, go to your doc.

My program says you can gain 5-15lbs after surgery from swelling and fluids which you should release about 72 hours later. I got on the scale while I was in the hospital just out of curiosity and it said 298, 6lbs higher than the day before when I went into surgery and I had already felt like I was peeing my brains out in the hospital. By day 3 at home thought I was 288 so just wait, it will come off.

Yes it's true and very normal. They pump you up with so much fluid that you come out a few pounds heavier. Not to mention all the air they pump into you. But don't worry it'll all go away soon enough..

It is very common ... I gained about 15 pounds after surgery from all the fluid they were pumping into me.

It all came back off over the next two weeks

The sooner you can get up and get moving a bit the quicker it will come off as well

not every one gains ... some do lose ... This isn't cookie cutter surgery .. it effects each of us differently while some have similar experiences.

If you are super concerned about something talk with your Doctor. I can't stress that enough ... we are just another form of support .. but we are not your Physician

Thank y'all so much for the feedback. I guess I just some how missed that part. Silly me thinkin I knew it all, haha! All is better today. Other than a swollen sore throat, I'm much better! I'm back down to 218! The weight should start flying off now.

I'm starting to get hungry. I've stayed on clear fluids so far. Anyone have anything they ate to get them thru hell week?
