Some days I seriously think it would be easier to stop by the dr's office and have them dump a bag of IV fluids in ya.

My doc only warns us about straws cause there's usually a soda on the other end of it. I use them all time (minus the soda).

My surgery was in June last year, so I was not long out of surgery when the heat of summer hit. I found it very hard to stay hydrated if I did anything that would cause sweating or if I spent any time in the sun (basically, not in air conditioning). It was like I couldn't drink it as fast as I could sweat it. I almost went to the hospital a few times. Basically, I would get a headache and feel like crap. It gets better. I can easily drink 14-15 glasses a day now.

I got so dehydrated that I got kidney stones and then went into kidney failure, so...don't do that.

I am almost alwayd dehydrated. I can't keep up onit. I drink as much as possible but I also vomit quite a bit. So I was just back at my local er for a couple leiters of IV fluids. I drink all day but It is still really hard. I would do anything to get that 64+oz in a day. work on it and I also agree with Kel use a straw it goes so much easier.
I also find herbal tea to be easier to drink then cold water.

My advice- If you can't drink all your fluids, suck on ice cubes, sf popsicles, or eat watermelon. Once you get behind, it's hard to catch up, especially in summer!

Same thing happened to me, fell in the shower. Knocked myself out, and that was about 3 months post-op. Scary stuff. I notice i'm not hydrated or not eating enough now when I get dizzy/lightheaded. Your body knows when it is in distress, but it's your job to hydrate.

I am going to have my surgery 7/21 and I have a couple questions about the water issues. Can you count your protein drink that is mixed with water as part of your water?
Also I was wondering how many of you had a really hard time not drinking with your meals? Did you start doing it before your surgery to get used to it? I am thinking about starting that a couple weeks ahead of time...my doc doesn't make you do any special diet so I thought maybe I should at least do that.

yes you can count your protein drink as your liquids.
Not drinking with your meal- you have to be very aware of this- my family helps me with this...but we remove my glass the minute I take a bite of anything- including at restaurants- just take it away
