How long does it take before the bypass?
Hi,
I have been to the seminar and met the doctors. I go next Wednesday for my one on one with the doctor. I have medicare, so no problem there. I have my primary care doctor in total aggrement with me. How long usually between initial meeting and the surgery. I have no heart problems, but do have diabetis , high blood pressure and colesteral.

depends on your doctor and your insurance.
my insurance made me go through 3 months of seeing a nutritionist, which was the biggest hold-up in my case... once I was done jumping through all the hoops (nutritionist, letter of support from pcp, psych evaluation, etc, etc) and my surgeon's office sent my stuff off to my insurance company, I had approval within a day or two and my doc's first open date way 2 months after that (though I elected to push it back a month and a half further back since it worked better for me schedule-wise)

I had Lap RNY GB on May 26th. I also have Medicare and had no problems with approval. I have no heart problems but had high blood pressure and high cholesterol in addition to other health problems not caused by weight. My initial consult was 3/3/09 with the surgeon. Good luck!

My insurance took 100 days to approve my surgery. I had to go to my doctor for a 90 weight loss program before they would approve. It also helps to have a high bmi (above 40).

It was about four months from the time I first met with the surgeon til I actually had the surgery. I did not have to do a supervised diet, which made it a little quicker for me than for some people. The time passed pretty quickly, and I was busy with a lot of appointments I had to go to: dietician, psych, physical with my PCP, pre-op testing, endoscopy. I also had to take a class at my surgeon's office.

Hi Pam,
I agree with the previous posts. It all depends on your insurance and dr. It took me 3 months from my initial visit with my surgeon to have my RNY surgery. Good luck to you!
