Sugar free drinks
OK. as my surgery date gest closer I'm starting to get alittle freaked out.
I meet with the dietitian 1 week before surgery. I have questions NOW. I expect to be on a liquid deit 2 weeks following surgery. What liquids can I drink? Sugar free with Splenda? Sugar free with phene_____(you know the one)? I've heard drinks such as; Prople, Chrystal Lite, 100% fruit juice diluted 50%. HELP PLEASE!! Sugar free Jello? Sugar free pudding?
I'm very excited about this whole process....but.....I will have less then a week between Pre-op and surgery. Not much time to prepare before I get home from the hospital.

I've heard the ones you listed as well as sugar free popsicles, but no pudding until ok by MD. Everything you have at first is supposed to be clear. You might get A can of broth, from what I hear you'll be having sips at a time, and so don't buy too much. I've also heard that what tastes great now is nasty later, and vice versa. You're almost to the starting line!

When do the taste buds change? At what point can I expect to see this change?

I can tell you only what I've experienced. I am still tolerant and love the same sugar-free drinks I enjoyed before surgery.
I'm one week out and drinking Crystal Lite @ full strength.
My doctor has me on liquids for seven days.
Sugar-free jello,
chicken & Beef broth (I made homemade broths)
decaffeinated tea and coffee,
crystal light, propell,
non-fat or skim milk,
protein shakes, sugar-free
sugar-free popsicles
100% juices (Stay away from juice cocktails)
So far my taste buds haven't changed is what I'm trying to point out so don't bank on this happening as I did. Buy just a few things for yourself after the surgery because you won't be eating much at all the first week.
I guess you won't know how your taste buds will react until your on the the side.
You'll have a better idea what to stock up on about 5 days out.
Good luck and please let us know what changed for you.

another one that is ok is fruit2O.... it is sweetened with Splenda. I didn't care much for it myself, but it's not too bad for others. Just look at the sugar content. See if it uses artificial sweeteners. Before you leave the hospital, the doc, dietician, and nurses will make sure you know what you can and cannot have at that time. And, if you are unsure at any time, call the doc's office and ASK! Of course, ask here as well, but if you are ever in doubt, call the doc's office.
Oh, if you can't do skim milk because of the lactose ( I had a prob w/ it after surgery) try soymilk. Or lactaid or some of the other "fake" milks. But still, ask the doc.....

Flavored Waters
I've tried lots of flavored (non-carbonated) waters and only like 2. My favorite is Aquafina Splash and the other is Dasani. I don't like any of the lemon-flavored ones because they taste like lemonade that had 2 gallons of ice melted into it - very weak. But the Aquafina and Dasani are GOOD!!!
I also drink a lot of iced tea with Splenda. Other than that, no sodas. I sure miss my Diet Dr. Pepper.

Propel
Hi,
I have been drinking Propel, from Gatorade. It has been great for me.
Even now that I am 5 months out it helps when I have a little upset tummy.
I remeber that 1st week it was hell. But after that 1st week went by, things just keep getting better.
Try the Propel sip at first.

I love the Fruit2O, crystal light, and my favorite is grape Kool-Aid sweetened with splenda. You can make it by the glass or a whole pitcher. There are also Flavor Ice out now made with splenda 5 calories for 2 of them. I think these would be great early out since they are small. I eat one at work every night to help combat this heat.
