Default Help in making the BIG decision

I am contemplating WLS. One minute I am totally gung-ho, then the next I am scared for my 2 young children if something were to happen. I understand that I could get hit by a bus today with the same results. I also understand that if don't get my weight under control my kids will lose me anyway!

How do I acheive balance?

Today I think I will just work my butt off again to lose only 20 lbs. Tomorrow I will be all set for the surgery. Is this Dr. Jykle/Mr. Hyde thing normal?

I also can't help wondering if I am making the right decision for wanting to have the surgery or the other way around.

Does everyone have these same thoughts and concerns? Or am I just PMSing???!!!!

I think while we're looking into it and making the decision, we are going back and forth. It's a huge decision! Don't take it lightly.

Have you ever thought about seeking out a counselor, psychologist or pscyhiatrist yourself? Before the psych eval? They may help you go through some things that'll help you make a decision and feel peace about it.

I found that doing as much research and reading about the subject as possible helped me find the balance between fear/apprehension and acceptance. I am 4 weeks post op today and SO glad that I was able to find the balance.

I wish you the best!

Smile My 2 cents

I have 2 young boys, and I thought it was unfair to them to have a mom so fat that they were embarassed by me. To have a mom so fat, I couldnt run with them without peeing on myself. To have a mom so fat, she couldnt gather up enough energy to go camping and other strenuous activities.

Our own obesity can kill us. Blood Clots, heart disease, sleep apnea, diabetes...... do I need to go on. If you have a BMI of 40 and above you are dignosed as morbidly obese, I think we lose sight of that... MORBID means death. The risk of death by WLS is VERY low now..... it took many of us years to finally see it as the last option, the final resort to winning the battle of the bulge and achieveing optimal health. If you are wanting to lose weight for reasons of vanity rather than health reasons then this surgery is not for you. There is a huge difference between wanting to lose weight and HAVING to.

I looked into this procedure for 5 years, year after year I got scared and knew I wasnt ready, then I found a surgeon that I trusted with my life... and in return he gave me back mine.

I wish you nothing but peace with your decision. Best wishes always!

Great advice Annelle to see a therapist... really. If you are having conflict with the idea, talk it over.

It is totally normal to worry...I thought about my kids, too and ultimatley decided that I wanted to be the active, healthy mom for them. I wanted to be the thin, happy wife that my husband married and I just wanted to be happy again. It was the best decision I ever made. Life is great!!!

You acheive balance by
A - Admitting you have a serious problem that dieting has failed to solve.
B - Checking your surgeon's track record
C - Taking the necessary steps to help your surgeon insure you will get off the
table alive.... Quit smoking & Start walking

Information and research will help you decide. Also, you must look within yourself to find the right answer for you.

here's a few links to get you started, of course I'm biased
