Hey
I am about 6 1/2 months out and i did notice that i was "feeling" hungry more often than before. You have to just keep chugging on your fluids. I think that the hunger is really in our heads most of the time. I found myself thinking about what the girl next to me was chomping on, and then all of a sudden i was 'hungry' I keep cheese sticks in the fridge at work for those times and just go grab one or make myself some sugar free hot chocolate, and that really works for me. The hot choc is warm and makes me feel like i am having something sweet at the same time. ANDDDD it adds to my liquid count for the day too...lol

1st question- are you eating enough protein?

2nd question- are you getting enough fiber?

3rd question- are you drinking enough water in between (but not with) meals?

Not getting enough of any one of the above things can make you "feel" more hungry than you really are and push you to eat things you may regret . . . dreaded "bad" carbsssssssss. If you've started to supplement your diet with carbs you will start to feel hungry shortly after eating. Getting back to the basics and upping the exercise will get you out of your stall you just have to keep it up until the numbers/inches start working in your favor!

You can do it!

Well fit-bump for your efforts, keep on keeping on and you'll but through your stalls. Case in point I'm 12.5 months out and I had a 2 month weight stall, but once I started losing again, I dropped like 10lbs in one week. Water weight has been the bane of my existence, but it is what it is. Your tool works- even when you least believe it. Good luck!

As the others have said, but I'll repeat for emphasis..

Fluids.. I know when I don't get enough fluid in, I get hungrier than I do when I'm well hydrated...(NOT diet coke which leaches calcium we can't afford to lose, from our bones!)

Protein/Carb ratio.. I find when I get too little protein or too much carb in my diet that I get hungrier and I get hungry sooner than I do when it's in the right balance..

And heaven forbid the fluids/protein/carbs all get out of whack, I'm starving... I have to work REALLY hard to get my fluids in, because honestly, I never feel thirsty at all. Pre-op, I always ran on the slightly dehydrated side in my labwork and I'm still seeing that now and it does affect me (in many ways, too... from stalls, to hunger to just ill feelings)

Make sure you're eating lots of protein and not carbs.

Other than that, make sure that you're not reacting to bad programming.. like people around you are eating so you have to, the tv is on so you need a snack, it's noon so you're hungry even tho you just ate an hour ago.

Our bodies learn patterns and our stomachs and brains respond to that.

I agree with everyone else. Protein fills you up longer. And for me, if I drink Iced Tea or occasionally Diet soda, I get hungry. I think the caffeine eats at the stomach and gives it a hungry feeling. So if I really want that iced tea, I tell myself, ok, but you will feel hungry and I tell myself to ignore it because it is a lie. And I don't allow myself to eat until the next meal. If I don't feel that I will be strong enough, I don't allow myself the iced tea that day. I know everybody...it should always be water!

Melissa, everyone has given you good advice. Now that your appetite is back you really need to work on your brain. Your tool is still there but you do need to use it properly.

My suggestion is you start journaling. Look at what you are eating. Can any of that cause you to become hungry sooner? Are you drinking WITH your meals? Are you waiting 45 min after your meal to drink anything? What kind of food are you eating? Is it high in carbs? If so that sets you up for being hungry.

If you still have information from your nutritionist pull it out and read it over. Start journaling your meals to make sure you are still following the pouch rules.

You need to get in AT least 60 grams of protein, preferably dense protein. Not drinks, soups, etc. If you are a meat eater make sure it is meat. It will stay with you the longest and take the longest amount of time to digest.

Your body digests carbs very quickly which makes you hungry. Also are you drinking caffeine? That will be working against you in several ways. It stimulates your hunger and can cause the "munchies". It is also a diuretic which causes you to lose more fluid so you run the risk of being dehydrated.

If you are struggling with your meals I would highly suggest that you email your surgeon's nutritionist and ask for help.

I had a bad month last month (as you can see from my numbers). A long stall combined with some bad eating habits. This month is much better (down 6 pounds in 10 days). One thing I figured out is that I need to drink a LOT of warm liquids. Cold liquids don't stop hunger for me. Lately I've been drinking tea. Also, chicken and turkey fill me up like nothing else. Quiche is good too (I usually just leave the crust uneaten). As much as I like softer and more liquid things (like home made turkey soup), I can eat too much of it.

I wish I was like the people that don't have an appetite. My hunger returned at about 3 weeks out.
