Hail falling out.
Sallow appearance.
Gums and teeth decay.
Irregular heartbeat.
Fatigue.

There are probably others. I think it differs, depending on what you are depleated of.... Just don't cheat on water consumption. You really, really need lots of water.

Your doctor can tell you what you need by doing blood work.

Twice since surgery? You'll be getting on for 8 months out!

Melissa - the normal seems to be bloodwork at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months and then annually thereafter.

I'd certainly want testing regularly - especially during the first year.

And don't bank on B12 shots. They're generally only given when people have shown an obvious problem with absorbing their B12 from the sublinguals.

I saw from your other thread that you've got a problem getting sufficient protein in. Have you been taking all your vitamins, B12 and calcium?

Thanks corrine..yes I take a daily vitamin ,calcium pill, protonix, and a iron pill my doc prescibed after surgery. Should I see my family doctor for these check ups? I jsut assumed it was fine to go when my surgeon says. Maybe I will make a appointment tommorrow. My surgeon did order blood work at the end of this month.

"A" daily vitamin!!!

The current recommendation is 200% of RDA. That usually works out to be 2 multivitamins days. Is that calcium pill as in singular? You should be taking between 1,500 and 2000mg of calcium citrate a day.

What about a sublingual/spray B12? B12 deficiency has been well documented after WLS.

You really need to start being your own advocate sweetheart and if you don't think you're getting the best treatment from your surgeon, then try your PCP.

You really need to get on top of this situation now.

I know that you're having bloodwork drawn at the end of the month.

In the meantime, start taking 2 centrums a day as of right now (one morning and one evening).

Increase your citracal - you need between 1,500 and 2,000mg daily. Take 500mg at a time and avoid taking it within a couple of hours of your iron med.

Go to Walmart and pick up a B-12 sublingual as soon as you can. I was started on 1,000mcg/day. They're dirt cheap.

Personally, I'd also recommend you take a B-50 complex. What with your protein difficulties and inadequate vitamin/supplement intake, I'm sure you'd benefit from some additional B vitamins. Walmart or GNC has them.

You might also want to look at a Bariatric vitamin. I take these Bariatric Vitamins | Gastric Bypass Vitamins | Celebrate Bariatric Vitamins - Beth does too.

A little more expensive but they have everything you need and in the right form.

And on your road to start being your own advocate cause it doesn't sound as if your surgeon up to it, start by reading this on the new nutritional guidelines. Heavy going but it really is informative. Hey! Maybe your surgeon could do with a copy!

Ok, sweetie. Sounds like you need a crash course on vitamins.

First of all don't feel like a dummy! It sounds like your surgeon hasn't really given you much direction. He basically gave you the tool without instructions. No wonder you don't know what to do. So don't beat yourself up. Start doing A LOT of research, ask A LOT of questions. It's basically time to get back into school for weight loss surgery!

Basic rules for vitamins. The centrum isn't the best choice but there are worse ones. At least it isn't Flinestone chewables. This is what your day needs to look like and then will need to be adjusted depending on your labs. The calcium is the right kind but not enough.

am:
1 Centrum Vitamin
2 Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D (500mg)
1000mcg sublingual B-12 (you can find this in any drug store. You put it under your tongue and let it dissolve)

At least 2 hours later:
30mg Iron (Ferrous Fumerate, Ferrous Gluconate or Carbonyl iron)
500mg Vitamin C
-you can't take iron with the calcium. They will counter-act each other. You also can't take it with any dairy products. The only iron I've been able to find is the Gluconate over-the-counter.

supper:
1 Centrum Vitamin
2 Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D (500mg)

Bedtime:
2 Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D (500mg)

These are the MINIMUM that you should be taking EVERY DAY FOREVER! Just because your labs may be "good" doesn't mean you don't need your vitamins. If you are showing deficiencies things will have to be changed.

Personally I would get your pcp involved. Come with a handful of information to help him/her know what you need in regards to follow-up. I would also get myself to a nutritionist. One that knows weight loss surgery if possible.

In regards to nutrition? You need to be getting in:
60grams protein MINIMUM. Probably should be more like 70-90 grams
Calories: 1000-1200 from healthy food. Not sugars or simple carbs.
Fat grams: Less than 30 in 24 hours.
64 oz fluids (no carbonated sodas, limited caffeine) 32 oz should be coming from water.

These are my surgeon's recommendations.

Corrine is the vitamin guru around here. So take her advice. She knows what she is talking about. Me? I'm an RN with some bariatric background (hopefully a lot more! ) so I do know a bit about what I'm talking about. We'll get you going the right way. Most important thing is that you are willing to make the changes. It isn't too late but you are heading for trouble if you don't make changes.

Yikes--I am 2 months out and have had 3 post ops and one for a problem at my drainage site. If anyone is interested these are the vitamins my surgeon recommends. Kinda sweet -- but I just had my bloodwork done and my levels are perfect. You take 4 a day--2 in the morning 2 at nite and they cost about 25 a month--well worth it--in my opinion.
