Dr. apt today
Again my Dr told me that Sharp will probably NOT approve. Then I got put on a 800 calorie diet. If I could follow an 800 calorie diet on my own why would I need GBS? I am totally willing to try-I also know that 800 calories is going to leave me feeling painfully hungry and that leads to me having to control the hunger ending in me dealing with another eating disorder. Also when I loose weight on this plan my BMI will drop and I won't be approved, how is this going to work?
I am so frustrated. I am hungry already LOL
I feel like I am injuring my body as well as psyche jumping through these hoops. Is there anyone I can talk to or do I just have to follow orders?
thanks

Hey cutie pie
Unfortunately that is the "new" way of delaying the surgery these days... instead of 6 month documented weightloss history alot of insurances are requiring a 800 calorie a day diet..... I ay you should just call a lawyer, there are foks that specialize in this and can help you.... folks here have used them before. Do the diet and get an obesity advocate lawyer in the meantime.... good luck lil lady! You sure are one heck of a fighter Dont let it get you down.....

Brittany I had to do the same even after all the other diets I had tried. I had to be taken off that HMR diet due to the fact it made me so sick. Just follow the ropes they tell you have to. That is the way Sharp does it. I mean I am not sure what your BMI is now but maybe you can appeal and send in a good appeal letter and if they deny you that final time you can take it to the Department of Managed Health. Without them I honestly believe I would be without an approval. Its a rough run but don't let them be the last standing. FIght it, fight it. If you need some help on writing a letter I am more then willing to help you out. Feel free to private message me. Keep your head up Brittany.

I have Sharp Health plan and they had me to go through there weight management program (HMR) for 6 months and it tramatized me to this day. After the WLS I couldn't drink any kind of protien shake. But don't give up.
That's my 2 cents.

Oops
just continue to go and do the program to the best of your ability. All they ask is that you do your best. and stick to it even if you don't lose any weight. They don't want you to fail at this program or the WLS either.

Hey Brittany...I had to do the diet game too before they would refer me.
At my very first appointment I handed the doctor a list of every diet I had been on for the past 20yrs. ...Every diet Doctor I had seen and every drug I had tried.
I went to all my appointments without missing one and at each appointment when they asked how my "diet" was going I asked him to give me one good reason why I should prove to him how well I could yo-yo diet.
They require you attend the program but they can't force you to diet. Just make sure you don't miss any appointments and don't give an inch. Tell them straight out you're not playing the diet game again and you fully expect a referral at the end of the required time.
Let the doctor know that you fully intend to hire a lawyer if you don't get referred.
Good luck.

I kind of wish I had an actual "program" to be involved in. I am just doing an 800 calorie diet per my Dr. I have been both anorexic and bulemic and i am really scared that in order to show that I have been "successful" I will regress to one of them again. When it comes to weight I am either totally out of controll or overly controlling......nothing in the middle has worked. How hard is it to know you are so hungry but you can't eat until you feel satisfied? I either eat until I'm done or don't eat at all so it's a choice I have made to be hungry, not just one I have to live with. Does that make any sence?
My BMI is just at 40 so I see my success at this diet dragging my 6 months of waiting (on top of the 5 months I wasted with my previous Dr) to about 9-12 months. That will be when I actually have gained the weight back (and then some I am sure) and become "qualified' for the surgery with a BMI of 40+.
In my head I understand that the ins. is shelling out $40,000+ for this surgery but I am loosing precious time, not weight---jumping through these diet hoops.
Can anyone recommend a good local obesity lawyer? Just in case.
Thank ggodness for thorough Dr's.....at that, mine is the best

Brittany,
You can buy the HMR shake mix and meals at SRS Weight Management without being on their program -- but it's really expensive. With 800 calories you would drink 5 shakes a day and eat 2 entrees. (Can you tell I've been there done that?) I lost 40 lbs on that program and gained back 50+. Without the tool of WLS I won't be able to maintain that amount of calorie intake. Good luck though. I suggest you mention your eating disorder issues with the dr.
