Default Medical Question

I have a friend who is on psyche meds and may have to go on lithium. She really wants to pursue WLS, but is worried she will not be able to due to her situtation. She has been diagnosed with bi-polarism, so she thinks that she will not qualify for WLS. She is very discouraged. Is there anyone who could offer her some advice? I told her this is a great place to receive info. and she is hoping someone might be able to help her.

Thanks for listening.

Smile What I found out

I work for a surgeon and posed this question to him. Although he does not do WLS, as a surgeon he said he may have a problem doing this surgery on someone who may not follow up with care and meds. You know everyone has to get a psych eval prior to this surgery, and to the best of my knowledge I think they do it to see if you have unrealistic expectations or are delusional... if your friend can pass the psych eval, I would have to say that would be the grren light to go..... my psych eval wasnt that intense.. I dont know how the rest of the gangs eval were. My therapist asked me questions about my family, family history, my job, why I wanted the surgery, if there was a history of abuse..... pretty basic stuff. Like I said, if a therapist gives her the green light.. the thumbs up... everything should be fine! I hope this info helps. There are a couple of other folks who work for surgeon's also.. hopefully they can provide some input as well.
Take it easy sugar pea. See you at group tonight. Make sure you grab me!

Smile Bi-Polar

My wife and I are both bi-polar. My wife is on Lithium. We both had the surgery with no problems. Her Psychiatrist wrote a real nice letter which eliminated the need for a psych eval. So, bi-polar was not a problem in our case.

Woody and Bridge,

Thank you so much for the advice. I know this will help my friend and make her day to know that she has hope for WLS.

This place is wonderful and I feel so blessed to have all of you to communicate with and share stories.
