My "bible" says use liquids, a protein or a low calorie snack....so I can dig it.

Our booklets sound a lot more "scattered" than yours. We have like 3 different booklet type things and some extra handouts. The place I went has awesome docs and statistics, but they seem to lack in organization and follow up care....which is why I am even more greatful for you guys. I wish our "bible" was as clearcut as yours....now I'm jealous.

I asked my doctor about them and the only part that he really commented on was the water loading. He agrees with water loading, but only after 6 months and only if you are hungry or having difficultly with 3 meals a day only. He does not agree with protein supplements and restricts his patients to 3 meals a day and does not recommend milk at any time. These are his thoughts, but I know there is a wide variety of meal plans set out by bariatric doctors and dieticians. Its really a personal thing and you diet should really be planned to work for you.

Just curious....why no milk or protein supplements?

He feels milk adds 15lbs to everyone a year...whether you had surgery or not. I asked about it, and he said, if you want 15 extra lbs, then drink milk, if not, don't.

Protein supplements he claims adds weight that you don't need. I asked about 6 small meals and he said, you only need 3 meals a day, if you eat 6 then you won't be as successful as you want to be. He wants us eating real food, not liquids. He also says that its easy to fall back on high calorie liquids as you go along, so don't start them.

I did try supplements, especially when I wasn't getting in any food. Other than that, I have now stuck to real food which is so good after having a stricture.

That's interesting.......and I can certainly see his point with supplements. I still use them occasionally and just bought some......but I use 1/2 scoop and not everyday. It's more like for times I slack on protein. The milk thing flies in the face of all I've read......unless he means whole milk. I drink skim and non-fat dry. I do like to hear other docs/people's opinions. I'm a "take what you like and leave the rest" kind of person, and sometimes a little rule or tidbit from someone else's philosophy helps. I do know I have to watch the calories in liquids now that I eat pretty well. Thanks for answering my question.

Make sure you check with your doctor 1st. This surgery is too important for you to rely on info posted on the internet. JMO

I absolutely agree with you! I am concerned that people may read these and follow them as gospel. They need to follow what their own surgeon tells them. I see stuff like this posted and it really worries me. I REALLY want to know where they came from.
