HI!!! Yes, my avatar is different there. Plus, I've decided on RNY, so I don't spend anytime on LBT anymore. Glad you found your way here!

Nicole,

I'm one of the problem bansters over there because I haven't lost any weight with my band and put back the weight that I lost on the liquid preop diet so you may remember me from those posts. I've come here too and to another site where they have revisions to gastric bypass. I'm still working on the band but am considering a revision. They don't really like it when you have problems there in lapland but hey, not everyone is doing swimmingly on the band and they have to deal with it

Anyway good luck with your surgery, I'm a bit nervous for my daughter, but that's just because she's my daughter but I'm happy she's getting the bypass as opposed to the lap band like I did. You made the right choice, it's not always easy with the band. I've found a whole group of people at another site where they've all failed on it like I have.

Take care brandyII.

BrandyII,

Just a little forewarning...your daughter may have emotional ups and downs after surgery. I didn't experience them, but have heard they can be very, very difficult. So be warned. And she may even get frustrated about her "new life-style"...it's a big change, but oh so worth it in the long run!

Just be there to listen to her complain and/or express her frustrations...and go with her for walks too! Make sure she keeps hydrated (very important) and that she gets her protein in post-op.

And I'm sorry to hear that you are having difficulty with the lap-band. I initially thought I'd get the lap-band, but knew it wouldn't be the best option for me.

Cathy

Brandy,

I had a lapband done (October 2007) and it was a piece of cake. I had no pain in the hospital and no pain at home. Recovery was grand.

I recently had an RNY, but it was an open... so that pain was more intense because it was open and largely sore because of all the stitches (once all the stitches were out two weeks later, again, recovery was great).

I've heard that Laproscopic RNY's are usually pretty easy going as well. My hospital roomy had a lap RNY and she was doing tons better than I on the first day post-op or day 2... but we both managed to go home the same day (which was day 3).

The biggest hospital problem I had is that they keep making you walk... and you're so gosh darn tired.

I brought
-my iPod,
-earplugs,
-vaseline (for lips),
-a floor-length house dress with a zipper down the front (so that I didn't have to wear the hospital gown
-a good pair of hallway walking slippers
-hair dryer
-my going home makeup!

Before checkout, I took advantage of the hospital shower, washed my hair, dryed it, styled it, put on makeup, lipstick and earrings and I was good to go. Feeling human when you're leaving is a big plus.

I've had surgeries before, and for me, the best medicine was not to look like I've been hit by a bus coming home. Feeling clean, makeup and having my hair done gives me that hospital discharge boost --

...and then I went home and went to bed for 6 hours! to get that sleep I didn't get in hospital!

As for diet, it will be largely the same in the beginning as your lapband diet. Maybe you could restart your lapband by going along with her nutrition program. The liquid and mushy stage will probably be the same (mine was), but the difference is, sugar and fat are an absolute no-no. She won't be able to cheat because of dumping and banders don't dump. And her vitamin intake will be slightly modified.

NOW, I'm 49, 22 days post-op open RNY, and I'm still having TIRED spells (but I am over 300 and being tired is nothing new to me). There are days when I feel great but more days when I feel bleh. The support here tell me that week 5 is a great target for feeling fabulous after RNY.

Your daughter is young and much stronger than I... I'm sure that she'll just wizz right through it all and be home and smiling before you know it.

All the best to you and your daughter. Good luck with your losing!

Reboot!

Thanks Cathy,

She's already a bit on the moody side and in a bad mood at the moment but I'm always somewhat prepared for that. Although after the surgery it may be different too. I think the walking thing is a good activity for the two of us. And thanks, I do have lap band woes and am trying to deal but I'm glad my daughter won't be dealing with it, then I'd be really upset. Thanks for the advice, brandyII.

Thanks Marella,

May I ask why you switched from lap band to RNY?

I'm having a hard time with the fill situation and don't know if I'll ever hit the emphamis "sweet spot" everyone talks about! Right now I'm trying to eat healthy and walk on the treadmill but it's been a longgggg 9 months since surgery!

Thanks for all the ideas for her for surgery, I think we'll go shopping this weekend. I remember my biggest pain was from the gas pains but when you have an open surgery, had two c-sections, it's a bit more painful! Even so the RYN uses larger tools and cut larger holes and I'm pretty sure it will be more painful for her. She's bigger than I am but is much younger! Has some back issues though so walking with the IV and the open gown I'm sure will be wonderful! I'll try to get her something else and some slippers. Thanks and good luck with your progress, brandyII!
