You should be able to ask your surgeon and or his office for the procedure for your hospital on getting a private room.

For my Dr, it is standard procedure for bariatric patients to get a private roon on the oncology floor. They have cross trained their nurses to handle the special needs or bariatric patients.

It was nice to be able to sleep, walk, and just stare at the TV when I wanted to without having to worry about someone else in the room.

I appreciate everyone's responses! I actually emailed the hospital yesterday and asked them the procedure to go through to get a private room. Let's see if they write me back! I will also talk to my surgeon and/or insurance company.

I did the same thing. I came prepared with ear plugs and I put them in as soon as I was able to -- I wasn't bothered at all when the nurses came in all night to take my vitals -- they just did their thing and I only barely woke up. Plus I had the bed right by the air-conditioner.

I had a roommate the first night too, but it didn't bother me until the next day when we were both awake (she had a lap RNY, mine was an open). The problem there wasn't my roomy, but all the extra people, the nurses and visitors, drove me bonkers.

I brought my iPod, it covered my ears and I tuned them out with my favorite tunes.

Default Private Room?

I'm really lucky, my surgery takes place at a relatively new hospital and all rooms are private! However, I spent many nights and the hospital with a friend who was dying and even in a private room it is noisy. Take your ipod!

At my hospital they have 4 large private suites for their bariatric patients, plus they are at the end of the hall so you could leave your door open and hardly anyone ever walked by.

However, like others have said - the first night was awful. IV ran out and started beeping, full bloodwork done at 3am, several blood pressure, blood sugar etc checks every 90 minutes or so. The 2nd night was much better, maybe one check in the middle of the night.

So I called the hospital today and they said I can request one at the top of pre-op testing. I have no clue when that it. They said it's an extra $200 a night and if by availability only. I don't care about the money, I just hope one is available! She said I can't reserve one this far ahead. I can only hope I can one!

Ouch, that's a steep price, but probably worth it for your sanity. In my limited hospital stays, I have always been lucky to have a private room (at no extra charge). However, my mom was in the hospital last year in a semi-private room and had the roommate from hell for the first 2 days. The lady was practically deaf and blasted the TV from morning to night. Unfortunately there were no private rooms available and we couldn't get her changed.

Like the others said, even a private room will be loud. The hallway noise is always loud, and monitors are going off everywhere. Last time I was in the hospital, I always asked the nurses, aides, etc to close my door when they left the room...otherwise they left it open and the room was noisier. Buy some of those foam earplugs...you can find them at a drugstore. An ipod is good too, but sometimes you just don't feel like listening to music. I had a hell of a withdrawal headache after having morphine for 2 or 3 days (not WLS, something else), and would have killed for a pair of earplugs. By the time my hubby finally brought them to me, the headache had finally went away. Oh, and a eye mask would have been wonderful to have too, for napping during the day when the blinds didn't quite shut out enough light. Like I said, the morphine withdrawal really did a number on me, and I had a bad headache with sensitivity to light and noise. (I don't think morphine is supposed to do that to you after just having it for a short time, but my body is weird, lol.)

My mom called me crazy for wanting to pay that. LOLOL I figure, if a $20,000+ surgery is covered by insurance, what's $400 out of my pocket? Maybe the insurance will pay the extra. That would be cool!

The first time I was ever in a hospital (other than being born, lol) was when I had my son in 1989. Back then, it was only $15 a day extra for a private room...which I now recall that I had to pay. Inflatation certainly did a heck of a thing to that cost!
