The answer is yes. You won't want anything tight around your tummy for a while. If you have baggy pants that aren't snug around the belly those might not bother you. That's what I did wore "baggy" pants. Hmm wonder what size they were to fit my HUGE self, and be called baggy...lol

Jamies aren't really the best idea anyway, since you don't know how long you'll need the catheter.. I had to go home with mine.
Also, every time I moved from my bed to walk, stand, sit or anything, I would need a complete change of clothes.. this is not at all a common problem, as far as I can tell, I've not seen this problem with anyone else that has posted, but as far as I'm concerned, let them do the laundry.. I wore two johnny's when I got up..one frontwards and one backwards as a 'robe'.
(Oh.. I guess I didn't explain the need for the frequent changes of clothing.. suffice it to say it is gross.. and had to do with lap sites that didn't exactly close up as is normally the case.. I ended up needing stitches)

Just had my surgery last week, and if your stay was as short as mine, don't bother with either. I had surgery Tuesday and went home Thursday. On Tuesday I didn't really care what I wore, the drugs were taking care of me. On Wednesday, it was easier to wear the hospital gown with my own bathrobe over top for walks down the hall. Plus you still have at least an IV in so hard to pull anything over the tubes. Then on Thursday I got up, into the shower and into my "going home" clothes. I had some loose jogging pants and a loose shirt. My doctor gives us a binder (kind of a girdle) to wear so I had a soft t-shirt to put under it. My incision was high enough that the waistband didn't bother, and the waist was loose enough that the bloating from gas wasn't uncomfortable. Save your comfy jammies and gowns for when you get home and want to look nice for your visitors. Best of luck in your surgery, you'll do fine.

I echo what MdGrandma said. I was in and out in two days -- I did put on my own robe after the shower my last day, but then changed into my going-home clothes almost immediately.
Because you'll be dragging a pole with IV and whatnot attached, it'll be difficult to put your arm into a robe or nightie anyway. (It can be done, but it's sort of a magic trick!)
I had lap RNY the same day as MdGrandma, and although a couple of the laproscope sites are right at waist level, my elastic-waisted jammies I wore the first night home didn't bother me at all, and haven't since -- except that the lap sites have this surgical tape on them which itches, and I have to wait for it to fall off on its own!

For both my surgeries, open RNY and my revision, I bought sleeve-less nightgowns, cut them at the seam on the shoulders and sew(ed) velco so I could step into them and then fasten the velco and not bother the IV, etc. I still wear the ones from my revision a year ago, the first ones have long gone by the way side, but I was greatful to have them. Both my stays were 4 & 5 days. I was never so glad to get back to my own bed! Usually, you won't be able to wear panties let alone jamie bottoms with the cath. They usually take care of it soon though. I can't remember if it was the same day as surgery or the next, sorry. Wishing you the best luck.

Well I was only in over night so I just wore the hospital gown. When I walked a took one and wore it the wrong way for a robe. I had my catheter and IV in over night so I really didn't miss having my own nightgown or jammies.

I took jammies and a robe - only used the robe. It did feel nice to have my *own* robe there - with the hospital gown underneath.
