Default Are strictures something new in last few years

Since I found the board I see frequent mention of "oh it sounds like a stricture." This puzzles me. Are strictures something that have come from a newer version of RNY or different techniques than six years ago?
I'd never heard of them until I came to TT and the frequency of people suggesting a stricture as a common cause to questions people have is baffling.
Does anyone know when strictures became commonplace and frequent?

Strictures are a common problem/complication with ANY surgical proceedure where a new opening/outlet is made. Strictures are NOT just for RNY...that is basically just a term to explain that the anastimosis (area that has been cut and a new opening has been created) has begun to gain scar tissue and close instead of remaining open. They happen in various surgeries and can be a problem for some people. Strictures just happen to be the rather simple more common of all the RNY complications. There are actually two possible outlets for a stricture to happen in a person who has the RNY proceedure. So, no...it's not new, it's basically just a very generic term to define something that can happen in surgery. Does that make sense?

Zen, not only does it make sense, it is absolutely accurate, and thank you for your ability to put it all down so well.

I had a stricture at 3.5 months out, and it was easily fixed (endoscopy repair). It was my only "complication."

What are the symptoms of a stricture? Food restriction?

My own symptoms were the sick feeling like when you have a virus, inability to hold food down, and a total lack of desire to eat. Slight nausea.

My surgeon did an endoscopy, repaired it, and I ate a hamburger on the way home from the hospital (outpatient) - I was famished and very happy!

Keep in mind that I have a military doctor so their standards are different. My doctor said that the stats indicated that when they switched to the smaller stapler the cases of stricture went up to 35% as opposed to 2% when they used the larger stapler. She has done over 110 surgeries and only has had one patient with a stricture. The only issue with the larger stapler is that a leak can occur and take some time to close.
