Hair Loss???
Hi everyone! I'm very new to this site and just getting my feet wet. I have heard a lot of people talking about hair loss. How do you prevent it? I know its different for everyone but is there a special vitamin I could start now (I am pre-op)? And if I keep up with the vitamins and protien post-op I should be fine, right? I know it sounds silly worrying about hair...but as a heavy girl its what I like most about my outer appearance! Someone understands right???

Hair
I started taking Biotin right after surgery and so far, so good. I am almost 3 months post op. I think the protein intake helps, too. At this point, my hair is actually growing faster than it did before surgery. Turns out my hair prefers a steady diet of protein rather than little debbies. Who knew. HA! Anyway, I think you should expect some hair loss, at least that's what I have heard (and experienced myself when I've lost a lot of weight before) but if you keep up with protein and take the biotin, hopefully it will keep it to a minimum. Best of luck to you!

Megan,
I think the hair loss thing post-op is a bit of a crap shoot. Keeping up with your vitamins and supplements and taking biotin helps some people - others no.
I don't think there's anything you can do to guarantee there'll be no loss I'm afraid.
I've been lucky. At almost 7 months out, if I've had any loss, it's been minimal. I don't take biotin but I make sure I have a higher protein intake (around 100g), and I take larger amounts of most supplement (and include a few others like zinc, vitamins A and E etc. etc.) than most people. But it's all been cleared by my doc.

Hi Corrine!
Thank you for the advice! You say you take more than most people. Do you do that for other reasons or just to be two steps ahead?

Megan,
My original list was 3 x calcium citrate, 2 x B-12 sublinguals and 2 x multivitamins a day.
Now, bearing in mind that we malabsorb everything we put into our mouth, I didn't think that was good enough. And my first set of bloodwork confirmed it. Although all were in the "OK' range, a lot were way down in the lower levels. That wasn't good enough for me.
And there's growing medical evidence that the RDA of most vitamins and minerals is too low anyway.
I took a wider range of supplements beforehand so just did a little more research into the potential issues that RNY patients might have.
This is something you need to discuss with your surgeon/nutritionalist. Please don't just go taking additional stuff - it can be harmful.

I'm also worried about hair loss so along with the protein and normal supplements, I've added biotin & borage oil capsules.
Then, I also use Nioxin hair treatments.. I thought I noticed my hair was fuller and had more volume from these additions to diet and my hair regime, and it has been confirmed as I've had several people comment to me that they thought I was supposed to lose my hair, not have it grow thicker.
I'm just about three months post op, which is the prime time for me to begin losing my hair and I'm hoping these will have prevented losing much, if any. October is looming and I need my damn hair on my wedding day!!

I used to use Nioxin as well (just the shampoo and conditioner), and really liked it. But, I don't go to the same beautician anymore than I used to buy it from. I haven't seen it anywhere else. Can you buy it somewhere else other than stylists, or is it available elsewhere?

I use the shampoo, condition and scalp treatment that came in the starter pack.. the salon at our local Walmart sells it, which is where I bought it.. (pricey but if it works.. worth it.. if it's not working but I can't tell.. also worth it )

Thanks Misty, I'll check the next time I'm at Wally World. Heck, my hair is already a bit thin in the front now (probably thanks to PCOS), so I dread losing anymore.
