I, too, chose LRNY because of the faster weight loss, but also because I think it is a better tool for me. I considered the Lap Band, too, but after research, LRNY is a better fit. My surgeon agrees.

Wow very compelling arguments for the LAP RNY. I am very seriously leaning that way. Thanks for the all the input.

my surgeon chose for me...he said the RNY would be more effective for me. It would give me faster weight loss which I need b/c of my complications due to being so heavy.
Hopefully the gastric bypass will afford me a quick reduction in weight which will lower my out of CONTROL blood sugar and other things.

I trusted his judgment so I can live with the scar from open.

I am having the open RNY on the 25th. My doctor said the same thing....He has been doing this for 25 years.......He told me both...lap-band and RNY...He also explain that the lap-band has only been out for 6 years and there is still a lot more studies to be done....He stated that he has to redo the surgery on some patients because the patient would vomit so much and the stomach would get stuck up in the lap-band he would have to go in and pull the stomach back out...Just the thought me go with the open rny....Plus the endless fills and the travel...

I went into this process wanting the lapband. I knew people that had it and had success with it. Plus, I wasn't too crazy about dumping syndrome. But I finally decided to go with the RNY. The deciding factor was my age. I'm 24 now, and I plan to live for a long time. The only studies I could find on the lapband only went back 10 years, and that made me nervous. The wasy I think about it, the lapband would probably fail eventually, and then they'll have to do the bypass anyway. So I figured I'd jump in with both feet and get it done. My surgery is on May 12, and I'm getting super excited.

I went in wanting the Lap Band at first too. After talking to the doctor, I decided Lap RNY was best because I would lose the weight faster, and it was more effective long term. I also heard that your chemical balance in your body changes w/the RNY more so than the Lap Band. The hormones (or whatever) that make you feel hungry are more surpressed.

At first most people such as my family and my physician were leaning toward the lap band for me becasue i was so young and the risks involved with the RYN and it wasn't as permenant as the bypass was. I was told by my surgeon that bypass would be a good surgery for me becuase of the amount of weight i had to loose. He said he has had several lap band patients that are truly struggling and they have been a year or so out. I feel that the bypass is the gateway for me to live a happy and heathy life, i also felt that the lap band would just be another struggle, that i didn't want to deal with.
I feel like this is the tool that will be with me when i need it.
Hope I helped.
Good luck with your decision!

If I were to have the choice right now I would go with the band over RNY. I didn't know about the band then and I have a few reasons why I would try that first and then the RNY if necessary. First, yes RNY changes how much you can eat and WHAT you can eat. This is a good thing. But, RNY changes your plumbing and that's the part I have an issue with. There are several people out here who have had serious complications from the RNY. I've had a few and ended up having a revision last year. I think like I said to do it all over again, I would like to have had the option of the band and to have been able to try that first and then go on to the RNY if needed. But that's me. Hope you have great success in what ever your decision ends up being.
Sharon
