Along with chapstick (though I prefer Burts Bees myself ).. I will say the single most important thing is a patient advocate with you, as much as possible.
They may not necessarily be needed to advocate on your behalf, but if you need someone, it's really important that they be there.
Mine was not there the morning directly after my surgery and I seriously needed him to be there due to an unsafe situation that was developing.
Even if all they end up doing is watching you sleep, I still would highly suggest you have someone that is there, strictly for you and you alone if at all possible..

My Hospital Release Papers!
I kid you not! I had everything I need thanks to the forum here. The day after the surgery, I was up, bouncing around on the bed and bored as all hell. Having Donna (sdgrrl) and Michelle visit was great, as was my family, but there's no place like home. The hardest part was when my Dr. came in and said I had to stay an extra day because my white count was elevated. That was THE longest 24 hours I've ever had. I was soooooo bored. I wanted to go home and get back to my life!
In case your wondering, I did go home on the third day. Our son picked me up. When I got home, I took a shower, and enjoyed a nice long uninterrupted nap. The next morning I got up, and went shopping with my wife!

I loved having my soft robe with me to wear on my walks in the hospital. I also recommend a hairbrush, a hairband (if you need it), slippers and underwear.

I never bothered with the books and magazines....the only important things I remember were a comb (hospital ones suck) and really loose and comfy clothes that are easy to get on for the ride home.

Great thread, I am copying a bunch of these down.
Vim, you crack me up! Did you really bring air freshener to cover up the fart smell?

Yes Sherri I did - I ALWAYS travel with an air neutraliser/room freshner. Musty motels, sick, dogs, cigarette smoke, hospital smells - staying with friends in a small space... I feel at home with my own smell "barometer".
Equally I stayed in hospital wearing perfume, lipstick and my red pashmina - feels more human and individual! Helps the morale and recovery!
Cheers,
Vim

Toothbrush and toothpaste is #1!! I am very obsessed with fresh breath and I sure felt gross not drinking anything so I got my use out of them.
2. chapstick or lip gloss - my lips were soo dry
3. fresh underwear! Since I couldn't shower till post-op day 2 I felt a little more human being able to have something clean on me!
3. an egg timer or something - I didn't have one and this would have helped me better than staring up at the hospital clock to take sips of water every two minutes
4. a support person - my hubby came and spent a few hours with me each day and really pushed me to get my water in. I needed that push.
I would forget magazines, word puzzles or anything like that. I didn't touch any of the stuff my husband brought. I was either drowsy and dizzy from the pain meds, up walking, eating, drinking or sleeping. There just wasn't much time for them.

I'll have to remember that in case I have a "fart problem" after surgery. In the travel size/sample size section at Target, I bought a tiny little aerosol can of Oust air fresher. I bought it for my last cruise, because those tiny cruise ship bathrooms can get rank very quickly! It is barely bigger than a tube of lipstick, and has 80 sprays...very easy to carry in a purse, or to pack for traveling.
I agree with you about keeping up the morale by looking your best. My great-grandmother was 98 when she passed away, and was bed-ridden for the last 15 years of her life. However, I never once saw her without lipstick on, and neatly combed hair.

I needed my crocs to walk around with, and I would have never survived with out my cell phone. I was sleeping a lot and or walking around as best I could so, my cell was the best thing to keep me in touch with my family
