Binge eating /compulsive overeating/lower BMI
Hi- I am new to this forum. I am considering having gastric bypass. I have a BMI of 35.8 and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I have tried everything you can think of to lose and usually can but can't keep it off. I am also seeing a counselor for compulsive overeating / binge eating. Is there anyone on here who had the same diagnosis (compulsive overeating/binge eating) and if so how did the surgery help you cope with those problems or what struggles do you still have? Also, is there anyone on here who started out with a lower BMI like me and how much weight did you lose? Was it worth the risks to you?

Thanks!
Thanks! I am about 75% certain that I am going to go through with the surgery if everything gets the ok. I have been struggling with my weight since I was a teenager and am now 44! The last time I lost weight I had a tummy tuck and a thigh lift and still I am gaining weight back. So, I have decided I need some help with this living hell. At my highest weight I was 245 and I am only 5' 2" so It was more than 100 lbs over my healthiest weight. Now I am 196 and hoping this will help me get to a healthy weight and stay there

Changing
I was a compulsive over eater and binge eater. Its weird how after the surgery your state of mind changes, without even trying. You just dont want to do it. Its automatic and its wonderful.
Dont get me wrong, sometimes I will be eating something wonderful and want more of it, and I know I cant, it can be a bummer. But the cool thing is you put it away and in an hour you can have more of it if you want. You can have it, but in moderation.
Having the surgery has freed me from food, it happens to all of us. Its nice. After the first month, you wont miss food anymore!

I can answer this one! I had all the issues you listed in your title. I had my surgery 7 months ago and have lost 59 lbs, which is slow...because I have the uncommon experience of being able to eat anything without dumping! Yet somehow, it is so much easier to make the right food choices after surgery...it's a mysterious and wonderful thing that happens.
Bingeing is out. Thanks to my small stomache, I can no longer binge. I still struggle with food obsession but, like I said, it's easier to control after surgery.
Good luck!

compulsive eating...
Hi, I am new, but I want to add about the compulsive overeathing, I do that, thought it was just me. It seems like when i get hungry, I start to eat, the food tastes so good, my tastes bud overpower my brain of telling me i am full. The better the food tastes the more I want it. Sometimes it tastes so good that I eat kinda fast and eat twice as much. sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to snack on sweets. Its crazy! Anyone else have this issue or have had this issue??

Katia - thanks so much for your reply. Would you have the surgery again?

The compulsive overeating and bingeing has me worried about being able to keep the weight off afterward. I am seeing a counselor who specializes in eating disorders and she is supportive of the surgery but reminds me I will still have the compulsions and obsessions!

I would absolutely do the surgery again. There is no way I would have lost 60 lbs. without it. Dieting was sooo hard for me before; I just couldn't do it. Now, eating right is so much easier. I indulge in sweets everyday, but just a tiny bit (4 Hershey's kisses)...not bingeing like I used to. I'm still obsessed with food, though, so I think it's good that you're seeing a counselor...you'll be ahead of the game.
I had a blessedly easy time with my surgery, much easier than I had imagined. I was afraid of being chronically sick with dumping, but that didn't happen either. In fact, I feel amazingly "normal", like I didn't have the surgery at all. For me, it's been a totally positive experience...
Hope that helps...
Katia
