Default Post-op Pregnancy

I'm not sure I'm doing this right - I couldn't figure out the chat. My question is regarding post-op pregnancy. The last information I read recommended against GBS if you want to have children (or more children). I was shocked to see a picture of the quite pregnant Carnie Wilson. Anyone care to discuss this or can anyone answer questions on this matter?

I know that we have had two woman in the group that I know about have a baby after WLS. When I looked into it before having surgery I found that it is a lot more healthy for you and the baby. It is easier for you to get pregnant and carry the child to full term. Maryclipper on here just gave birth to a little boy on the 1st or 2nd and they are doing fine. I have heard that you have to be careful because of eating so little but I've heard nothing else against it.

Don't you love misinformation? I think that's just a scare tactic to keep people away. Or it's left over from the days when WLS was more of a risk when surgeons didn't have as much info and experience with WLS.

Hey, people don't say never get pregnant when you're morbidly obese. The risks of fetal complications is quite high with obese mothers trying to carry a healthy baby to term. Even without WLS, many mothers have trouble with providing enough nutrtion to their baby.

Thumbs up Pregnancy after WLS

If I felt there was a danger in having children post WLS I wouldn't have had it. I had the surgery for several reason, including my infertility due to being morbidly obese. I was told if I lost 100 lbs I would be able to have children.. so we'll see..

There are a few people I know of who have had or are having children after WLS. The safest thing to do is to wait about a year before getting pregnant. By then you can eat PLENTY of food for a fetus to survive. Of course you still don't want to get into that habit of thinking you have to eat for 2. I don't know any baby that eats as much as an adult anway.. lol

It is much safer to carry a child after WLS and at a healthy weight than it is being morbidly obese.. and from what I hear.. much easier on the Mom too.

Default pregnancy after weight loss

here's my opinion. when i was pregnant with my daughter i was heavy and as a result of being heavy i was a high risk pregnancy. i had gestional diabetes, due to being overweight, high blood pressure, adema. that's all i remember now. now that i'm 2 years out and extremely healthy, i would not get pregnant since of my age, 48, but if i was younger my pregnancy would be a lot safer not being obese any more. the amount of food i eat now being 2 years out is what any other normal thin person eats. as time goes on you are able to eat more. look at mary clipper. she had a lot of the same problems as me with her first pregnancy and with this one she did just fine because she was so heathy and had no complications.

The nurse coordinator at my docs office had wls 5 yrs ago and has since had two perfectly health children! She was unable to get pregnant when she was morbidly obese. I would definately ask the doc his/her opinion on the subject, but from everything I have read I haven't heard of any problems related wls other than noutrional ones and those are fairly easy to remedy.

Post Pregnancy after WLS

I had the same concerns and I asked my dr about it during my consultation. He said that I should wait a year after surgery and to tell my obgyn immediately so I could start on folic acid. He said that there were no increased risks of low birth weight and all that. My first son was "underweight" but then he's a bean pole like his dad and my dad, all legs.

My doctor won't let me get pregnant after surgery... but since I'm a guy, I'm OK with that restriction.

Default Thank you to all who replied

I would like to thank all who replied to my post-op pregnancy question. WLS is fairly new in Southwest Kansas so I'm still trying to get all of the information I can and the pregnancy issue was a real concern to me. Any words of wisdom for a beginner?

I appreciated your post as I wondered about the pregnancy question, too. My surgeon asked that I wait two years post-op. Plus, they go back and forth on my being infertile, good to know that weight loss will help.
