Default Heart Burn?

I have been not doing very well eating wise for the last 4 months and have gained some weight. During this time I have ignored the signs. I have been majorly depressed which is no excuse but the truth. I have no problem eating anything, which has been really hard to stay on track. For about a month now I have had heart burn with everything I eat or drink, even water. I have been trying to get back on track for about a week with the eating properly and I am still getting the heart burn with everything I eat and even with water. Also, I am waking up with it which is usually about a 8-9 hour layover of no eating. I thought that after Gastric Bypass you don't get heart burn. My question is this 4 month free for all did I screw something up with my pouch? What should I do to get rid of it? Any advice will help.

Sorry your feeling bad. I thought you weren't supposed to have heart burn either. Did you call your doctors office? Maybe you have an ulcer or something. Feel better soon.

Thank you very much. No, I haven't called my doctor yet. I was hoping that I didn't have to and wishing it would go away. I might have to but he takes forever to get into. Thanks for the advice.

At my 3 month post-op visit last month I was told that I wouldn't have heartburn cause the acid is in my stomach, not in my pouch.

Daisy - has your doc got you on anything like Prilosec?

Do you get the heartburn in your throat? I get heartburn with everything I eat and drink (even though I'm pre-op) too. Sounds like an ulcer to me though. I would check with your doc just to make sure.

*hugs*

Ulcer of the anastomosis is not unusual. No matter what it is, it is not normal, especially when it happens with water, see your physician, that is the best you can do.

Thank you everyone for tips and advice. Corrine I haven't been to a doctor for a while. If I remember right my surgeon did put me on something because I had heart burn only a couple of times after my surgery but it didn't work. I have really pig headed doctors and I am constantly fighting with them to get tests done. My surgeon I haven't been for a check up since my Diagnostic Laproscopy Oct 31 of last year. I spent a lot of time doing test after test to see why I had this pain in my lower left side. I was really frusturated and told him that I don't agree with his diagnosis so Dr. Farries suggested doing this one last test. I said lets do it. I waited 3 months just for the date. He kept on saying that a lot of his patients had the pain in the left side for a year or two after the gastric and he didn't know the cause. I didn't agree with him so I fought with him until he did the Laproscopy. He found 2 leisons and a very large cyst on my left ovary. So, I was right but it took months and months to get him to do it. I still have pain in my left side to this day. Not as bad but still there. I told the surgeon that after this test if nothing worked I would leave it alone and hope the pain goes away in 1 to 2 years. He has done every test possible regarding my left side, so he says. So, with the surgeon no I haven't went back to him. Now with the doctor I have you can only go in and see him with one concern. He likes dealing with one thing at a time and if you have another concern make another appointment. So, my last visit was to ask him about my antidepressents and we faught about that too. I told him I don't think they are working and I would like to try something else. He said that he thinks it is just the time of year and to double my dose for 1 week and then go back to my normal dose and I should be good. So I guess I am freaking out about having to go to any of my doctors. Sorry Corrine that was a long story. My mom gave me one of her heart burn pills last night and they didn't work. I guess I have to go to the doctor.

Lori P. My heartburn is always in my throat. Never anywhere else. I actually had to ask someone what heartburn felt like because I never had it before this time.

My doc had me on RX Zantac for few months after surgery, and I still take it OTC to this day (almost 2 years out). If I skip a day, by day 3 I start to feel it. Have it checked to be sure, but heartburn is pretty common. Prilosec OTC or Zantac OTC seem to work well to keep it "at bay", and with both they are the once-a-day type pills....

So, it is common after Gastric Bypass? That is a relief. I think it was Zantac that my mom let me try and it didn't work. Also, what my surgeon gave me just after the surgery. I will have to try the other one. Thank you.
