Default Hey Everyone! Have a few questions...

Hey everyone My name is Jen and I'm 20 years old. My mother just had WLS in December of 04 and has had nothing but success so far. I was there through all of it, so I guess I know what to expect. Unfortunately, I inherited her bad genes and have been having weight problems my entire life. I'm 5'5" and 235 pounds I'm terribly afraid of becoming diabetic like my mom and am having a ton of trouble trying to maintain a weight and the depression is taking over. At first I didn't think I would ever be eligible for the WLS, but then I was reading and a lot of people started in my weight range.

Well, I guess I just have a few questions for anyone who would be able to help me. My mom set me up with a consultation with her doctor in Philadelphia for June.

*How long does it usually take between the consultation and the actual surgery date?

Ok, maybe just one question. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all...I have just joined the forum also because I am contemplating GBP. I am gathering information, good & bad to help me make up my mind. I would like to know too how long from consultation to actual surgery? Also, I heard that you cannot eat dairy products afterwards? Is this true? I LOVE eggs & cheese for breakfast!!

Consultation to surgery time really depends. I've seen people get it within a month, others longer.

Some people become lactose intolerant after surgery, some don't. It just depends upon your make up. Yeah, I loved cheese before surgery and really had to think about that, yea, for about two seconds, whether I could live without cheese or not. My tastes really changed, but I still love cheese and coffee with my milk.

I would have given up anything (food wise) to be where I am today.

I know that my mom did fine with dairy. She would make me egg omlettes and make a little for herself too. She savored every bite of it

The time between consultation and surgery largely depends upon the surgeon, tests required, and ultimately, our lovely insurance companies.
As far as dairy is concerned, my husband and I have both had the surgery and we haven't had any problems with dairy. I drink skim milk everyday, and have cheese and other diary products many times per week. Lactose intolerance is pretty much based upon the individual. Good luck in your journey!

It took me 5 months betweeen initial consult and surgery. It took me 9 months total from the beginning. I was denied the first time though, so I had to appeal. Everyone is different and every waiting day is sooooo worth it.

It took me 10 months from start to finish. Sent to the wrong doctor first (not in my area), then an insurance switch and trying to get all the tests done. I turned lactose intolerant after surgery, but then I was partially lactose intolerant before surgery (it runs in my family). Within a month of surgery I was back to only partially lactose intolerant. Can't handle milk, cottage cheese, and ice cream I can only handle if I am in the mood for it (sugar free of course). Cheese I can eat no problem. Eggs? That is dairy products, not milk products. No problem with them. Good luck on your journey!

I think mine will end up around a year.I did not have the time for tests during the holidays because i am in retail. It goes by fast..maybe too fast at times.I know for myself...the waiting really gave me time to think about what a huge deceision I would be making.

Best Wishes.....Van

I started in October '04 and had surgery February '05. I had a friend with the same insurance who had the procedure and she really helped a lot! It took her 10 months.
