Default To eat or not to eat....

So I know I'm not alone in this situation, as I've seen a couple other posts, but I don't really ever remember having seen a definite answer one way or the other so....

The past two days I feel like I've eaten more than the entire week before. I don't know why, and I don't particularly care for it... but my understanding is that with our new pouches, our body allows us to eat what it needs... but not over (without making us sick, anyways). So do I listen to my body and eat when it tells me to? Or do I eat what I consider my "normal portions" and go hungry? Obviously I'm not over eating because I'm not getting sick... just satisfied.

Yes? No? Eat? Don't eat?

I can totally relate!! I have weeks where I look back and feel like I couldn't possibly have eaten enough to keep me alive and then the next week I feel like I have eaten enough for four people.

After I started to take a look at what I was eating and what was going on in my life I realized that usually the week before my period I am eating a little more and for about 2 days into my period.

Also as time progresses you are going to be able to eat a little more. It is really important though that you pay attention to your body and stop when you are satisfied. If you start to notice that it is becoming a problem and that you are stalling or even gaining, then back to the basics! Measure and stick to the portion sizes.

Good luck to you

What a good question: I am only 7 weeks out, and this evening I was really hungry, and ate for the first time alltogher: 2 eggs, 1 tomato, 1 slide of dark bread, and felt OK.... but it was too much for me Yes no yes no..... I am so scared to start eating too much again? but I listend to my body (hopefully not to my head).

Courage, and any tips here are welcome.

This is, indeed, touchy....

Here is my own opinion, for what it's worth......

I have a lot of hunger now. I force myself to ignore it and eat when and what I'm supposed to eat, in small portions. I don't know if this is right or wrong - I am just terrified to do anything else. If I listened to my body I would eat all the time (when I'm home - not when I'm out and about). So I am being strict with myself, and plan to stay that way.

The other thing, too, is that I can't always tell that I am full until 10 minutes later. So in theory (for me), I would eat and eat way beyond full because i wouldn't know I was full. Does tha make sense?

My pouch is still telling me when it's too much, but I feel like I'm eating more too. However, I'm writing everything down and I'm not actually eating any more than I have in the last few weeks. It just feels different. I did make it to 1000 calories one day and I panicked, but it was just one day, and honestly, I probably should be around 1000 calories at this point, I just can't seem to get everything in on most days. (Food wise...I get the protein in, though...)

My trouble right now is with liquids. For weeks, I've struggled to get in 64 ounces a day and every few days lately I'm up to 80. The problem (or the thing that worries me) is that just after the surgery, I could drink (sip) about 1 oz every 5-10 minutes, now I can get down 16 ounces in 15-20 minutes. I'm not gulping, but my sips are bigger. Is this normal? Is it okay?

I see the doctor for my exercise clearance appointment on Tuesday and I'll ask, but I thought I'd post here first and see what you all thought. I'm not getting or feeling sick, and I need the fluids, so I'm assuming right now that it's okay.

Fisher- I asked my doc about this since I too have been able to sip a bit bigger... just like you I can get down around 16oz in half an hour. He said it was normal and not to worry... as long as I wasn't feeling discomfort when I did it... hello why would I continue if it hurt!

As far as eating... until a few weeks ago I could only eat about 2tbsp's at a time... it was horrible! I was only getting about 300-500 calories a day... It seems though that the past two weeks I have been able to eat about a quarter cup... I think my pouch is just growing...

I guess as long as you keep eating good things and just make smart decisions it should be fine. Also that your meals are well defined and you aren't grazing.

The amount I have been able to eat has increased. The doctor told me that it would over time. The goal is to keep your pouch as small as you can for as long as you can, it is a tool and should be utilized as best as possible. Right after surgery I could barely get in 2-3 baby spoonfuls of anything. At about 2 months I was able to eat the 1/4 cup, 4-6 months I was at about 1/2 cup and now I am between 1/2 and 3/4 cups.

I too can drink water without having any discomfort. During the hot months there were a couple of times when I was working outside came in and had a big drink of water and felt the familiar pains of overfull. In general though I am drinking more at a time which is making it so much easier to get all the fluids in that I need to.

Things will change over time, it is the natural progression of it all. Stay in touch with yourself and your body, talk to your doctors and follow their advice and remember it is a life style change. There are no more "bad" days, there is just life.

Mike I am 10 weeks out and do the same thing. I drink alot of water about 64 ounces a day.( I can 20 oz in an hour) Its normal. Thirst can cause you to think you hungry as well.

As you get further out you will be able to eat more. That is a general fact of the surgery. If you're concerned then I would say go back to basics again. Keep a journal. Protein first. 3 meals a day. Fluids, fluids, fluids. Regular exercise.

I would say that as long as you're following the rules and aren't eating more then about 1 1/2 cups of food at any given time that you're honestly fine. There are people who measure their food for very long periods of time and that is one way to keep it under control. I would also just keep track of what you're eating to make sure that you're getting in what you're supposed to when.

Ahhh my little grasshoppers!!!
You are now discovering why we preach to the very early out to form those good eating habits because the time will come (as it has for all of you) that your pouch will allow more in. The critical part is in what you chose to fill it with and that determines if it is ok.

I think at around the 6 month mark you can take in markedly more food. That strong foundation built over the last 6 months will keep you going in the right direction even with the increase quantity of food. All those mashed potato/grits/bread/cracker eaters early out....heed this message. Cut the carbs as you will be able to fill up and derail your weightloss. Once moderation is learned, then you can reintroduce them if you have established self control.

This tool is a get out of jail card (not for free), but once out of jail, you need to make the most of your life.

PS. The week before my period I notice an increase in hunger as well. What helped me at your stage is when I felt hungry, I drank something. Usually that either made time tick away and I forgot about it, or it wasn't real hunger.
2 years out, I don't ever feel real hunger, more like food lust or eat by the clock to get in the protein....BUT....I don't get that full feeling high up near my chest either. So I have learned what is an appropriate portion and stop eating.
Hope all this helped.
