Default Walking

A lot of you write that your walking a few to several miles a day.

This seems like a lot considering what you all have been through .

This coming from a Pre-op point of view

It's rather amazing what you can do afterwards. Today I walked my dogs 2 miles at a steady clip without any discomfort. A little winded, but no back pain. I even wen to the fair for 3 hours yesterday! It's amazing what a few pounds weight loss will do. Plus, we're quite motivated early on and it's energizing to see the progress. Regular exercise is the key for long -term loss. Also, I get bored easily and instead of eating like I use to do, I get up and walk. Not always outside. All it takes is a few spins around the house. Walking also is a great way to start getting toned up so when the weight comes off, there's something sexy underneath waiting to spring out

You can do alot more than walk. I danced for 2 hours at a concert last night and still had a ton of energy. Not bad since 6 1/2 months ago dancing caused my asthma to kick in.

Default Walking and more

Gerry,

I went back to the gym two weeks post op and slowly started walking. By five weeks post op, I was back on my regular machine. By six weeks, I went back to some of my classes. Eventually, I worked myself up to five classes per week, which include step, kick boxing, and circuit training aerobics. I also do weight training three times per week. Yes, with a thin, healthy body it is actually a lot of fun to exercise and try hard to work up a sweat. Before, the sweat use to just flow. Now I gotta work for it! The surgery made me stronger, not weaker. It gave me energy and health. Life is great!!

Exclamation You actually WANT to exercise!

You'll be surprised at all the motivating factors that get you to exercise more after surgery.

- You're stuck at home, recuperating, and the walls close in and there's nothing on tv that you haven't seen before, so you really want to get out of the house.
- The first 10 days of liquid diet will probably be the fastest weight loss you've ever had. You'll shed a number of pounds and start noticing loose skin in a number of areas. Weight training helps to alleviate loose skin.
- You're watching the pounds drop and you are so ecstatic, yet impatient in that you want to lose it all now. You start trying to find ways to accelerate your loss.
- You actually feel better! Most people who are on meds quickly go off of them; your feet and joints feel better with every pound you lose; you're not out of breath as fast.
- You start to finally realize that you have permanently ended your battle with yo-yo dieting, and the feeling of realizing that, if you follow the rules, you will surely make your goal FINALLY, is absolutely amazing.

I was a big walker before surgery (averaged about 35 miles per week at one point), but it's so much easier now that I'm 40 lbs thinner! Walking with Karen and Bridget at Lake Murray has been great. In less than a week's worth of walks (4x), I'm now walking 15 minute miles. At my old weight, it took me almost 3 months to get to that level and not feel like I was going to die.

I heard all of these great things on the message boards before I had the surgery. I had no idea how incredible this journey really was. It's the best decision I've ever made.

Default Walking

It seems like you guys have a renewed energy level for walking after you had the surgery. It just seems kinda weird looking in from the Pre-op point of view.

Default It is different Gerry..

Gerry,

It is very wierd how much you change after your surgery. Getting me to exercise before surgery on a structured routine would have been impossible... unless you wanted a fight on your hands.. lol I have asthma and couldn't even think of walking 4 miles at Lake Murray before my surgery!! I did ok when I went.. a little hip pain about 1/2 through but I made it thanks to Tracie!!!!

However, now I really enjoy going to the gym and at first I was only doing the treadmill.. but realized that I wasn't working up a sweat so I started on the eliptical machine which kicks my butt but I love it. It's just a whole new life, and a second chance at a healthy and thinner life.. so we just take full advantage of our "gift" from Dr. Callery or Dr. Potts and do the best we can possibly do. Of course some are doing better then others but everyone heals differently and in their own time. Don't compare yourself to others post op, since everyone has a different body and a different story.. just do the absolute best you can do for yourself.. and you will not fail.

Trust me I can't believe that I am actually taking time out of MY day to go to the gym.. I mean there has to be something good on TV or something right?? LOL

You take care and trust me you will say the very same things very soon..

Gerry.. I dont know if you know this but MEN.. damn you men, lose weight MUCH faster than woman. You are going to burn off 50 pounds in like 2 weeks! It's amazing how fast the men lose. Just as Woody. He is a post op guy. You are going to be amazed!! I am so excited for you. Then in a matter of no time, you'll be out shakin' that thang.... but dont forget me when you do!
