Protein Supplementation Help...Please!
I am getting nauseated with all of the protein supplements. I've tried 8 different brands of powders and the New Whey protein shots. Just thinking about them is gagging me. (I'm 10 days post-op) I'm struggling to get in the amount of protein I'm supposed to have and am beyond frustrated. Is this where the depression comes from that people talk about after WLS? If it is, I TOTALLY understand it now.
I'm not that interested in eating a whole lot, and I'm also trying to get in 64 ounces of fluid a day as well. (Which I've done.) This morning, I tried unflavored powder in applesauce and barely swallowed one bite...I had to throw the rest away.
Does anyone have any good ideas? There's only so much milk I can drink and yogurt I can stomach. (No pun intended...)
Thanks in advance!
-Mike

Take a deep breath take it easy....you do what you can. Keep trying proteins until something works. Perhaps other WLS patients have left overs you can try until you find one you like.

I was the same way early out; the protien made me nauseated. I think it is just your body healing, and cannot handle it yet. In a couple weeks the protien may go down a little easier.
Just do what you can for now. Have you tried Nectar protien? That is what I am using now, and it is good for me. It is not as thick and tastes pretty good, considering. go to Vitalady and order samples of each flavor to find one you like.
At your stage I was doing one New Whey 42 gram vial a day. I mixed it with a big bottle of rasberry ice crystal light and drank all day. That was the only way I was able to get any protien supplements in at all.

You can do it with regular food...
You will be able to get your protein in eventually, just keep trying different stuff. Bluntly, I never got to where I could handle protein supplements. I still can't. I try a protein shake every once in a while, because it would be nice when I'm not hungry to be able to just bolt a shake and go... but they still make me yak.
So, when I started out, I was using cottage cheese, low-sugar peanut butter, string cheese, pureeing meat, etc. Everything I ate was protein-oriented for a year, now I add a few carbs here and there, but I'm still largely protein-focused. You can do anything if you put your mind to it, including getting enough protein in without using protein shakes.

Mike - we had our surgery the same day and so far, I'm with you every step of the day.
I managed just one day of the protein bullets and powders etc., and got 71g. If I make half of that a day now, I'm doing well.
I can generally gt one protein powder down me - made with fortified milk, and that is stretched throughout the day. I can't do more.
Liquid is fine - mostly herbal tea but I'm around the 60oz mark each day.

I like sf carnation instant breakfast. Not as much protein as the suppliments, but at least it is better than nothing. I bought Unjury. It is not that bad, but I have not been drinking it. lol I am trying to get my protein in other places. Good luck with everything!

I went to the doctor today, and he pretty much said to suck it up. (It's okay...I appreciate directness.) He said on the days that I can stomach it, do it, on the days that I can't, find it in something else, which I did today.
He also told me (as I'm only ten days out...) that I could start reintroducing food. I'm a little weirded out by that as I'd be skipping two of the stages. (I was starting the Pureed stage today.) I stuck with Pureed anyway and had Refried Beans with some FF cheese. It was freakin' delicious and had like 14 grams of protein. I also had a 3 oz chicken breast with a little boiled egg and some reduced fat mayo that I put in the blender and made chicken salad with. It was awesome too and had over 25g protein. (Though it took like an hour to eat it.)
At the doctor's office, the other patients that I spoke with that had surgery the same day as me were still struggling with liquids, and haven't even broached the protein topic. They were having trouble with nausea and a slew of other problems that I've had intermittently but haven't been overpowering. I've been forcing myself to follow the Dr.'s directions to the letter whether I felt like it or not. I want this to work.
Incidentally, I was rewarded for my effort with a whopping 28 pound weight loss from my pre-surgery starting point. I almost passed out when I read the scale!
I think I'm going to be okay. Today was a good day.
Thanks for all of your input!
-Mike

Mike! FREAKIN' AWESOME weight loss already! Good going on finding some things you can enjoy... sounds like you're doing much better than the other patients... Probably cuz they aren't here, learning - sharing - leaning on others at TT!

That is terrific news Mike - my follow-up isn't until next Tuesday. I hope I get cleared to go to the pureed stage.
Keep up the good work - 28lb is something else!
