I've never been a big drinker in general, and I rarely drank alcohol before surgery because for the past 10 years or so I'd been experiencing unpleasant side effects when I drink. (I would get really sweaty and feel dizzy and light-headed, and not in a good way.) I've been a little hesitant to drink since the surgery because I didn't know if I would dump on alcohol or not, and I don't keep liquor in the house so it wasn't something I could try out at home to see what happened. Well, the other night I was out with a friend and decided to try having a drink. I had one Cosmopolitan (my drink of choice...yum!) and just sipped it slowly over the course of a half-hour or so. Well, now I understand why some people develop alcohol problems after surgery! I didn't dump at all, which was a relief since we were at a nice restaurant, but I didn't have that sweaty, dizzy feeling either. I just basically felt a little tipsy, and happy and relaxed. And like I've heard other people say here, that lasted for maybe an hour and then went away. I just had the one drink, but I can see how some people might go out for a night on the town and just stay shit-faced all night long!
