Lap RNY AND Hysterectomy?
My Gyn wants me to go see a surgeon she recommends so I can have the Lap RNY & a lap-assisted hysterctomy at the same time. I think she's insane. I need a hysterctomy for sure but there isn't any urgency. She even said I could take my time and think about things.
Can your body handle two major surgeries at the same time? I told her I would think about it, but also told her I would rather have the Lap RNY this year & the hysterectomy next year to see if maybe some of my symptoms subside with weight loss.
I am interested to hear what you all think?
Is she crazy or what?! LOL Just kidding I love her but this one through me for a loop.

Hi Excited,
I had my Open RNY in May. After I woke up while in recovery, they told me I had to have a hysterectomy (the Dr. found a tumor the size of a football in my uterus.). My Dr. and the OB/GYN he called in removed everything except my left ovary.
I also found out that he had to remove my appendix and gall bladder! I got my money's worth with this surgery!
I took 5 weeks off from work, which I would have done even if I had the open RNY alone.
I feel that you would be fine having both procedures done at the same time. I had no harder time recovering than when I had my 2 c-sections, other than the change in eating.
Good luck with your decision!
Jane

I also had two surgeries in one. I had the open procedure and had two hernias repaired. I was cut from my navel to right between my breasts. It was a big cut but I was glad to get my hernias repaired. I wish they would have taken out my uterus too....I need a hysterectomy too but they wouldn't do it before cause I was "too large" and high risk due to my weight. When we get settled in Japan I will look into having it done then. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide. If you are done having babies or don't want any than having both done at once would be ideal to me. Do what is best for you.

My big questions would be how much longer I'd be on the table and what that does to the risk of blood clots. I don't think that your gyn would just randomly suggest you get the hysterectomy just for the fun of it, but if you can medically afford to wait a year, and also to see if your symptoms clear some, then I would personally wait. Not knowing your history or the reason for the hysterectomy it makes it a tough call, but the longer you're on the table the higher the risk of complications.

I have fibroids (still small), suspected adenomyosis and horrible pain, bleeding with my periods & horrendous PMS. However...she put my on bc pills a few months ago & all is well with them. I am 46 and don't want to be on bc forever but it's working for now.
She said I'd be on the table total 4-5 hrs because they would do the lap RNY and then turn the scope around & do the lap-assisted hysterectomy. Blood clot risk is no higher than just having one or the other.
It's a lot to think about. She caught me off-guard that's for sure. We have discussed a hysterectomy in the past but today was more of a serious discussion.

I honestly wouldn't personally want to be on the table for that long. If the pill is working as a temporary measure for now then I would wait. I know that for my lap RNY I was on the table under 2 hours. I just think that being on the table for the possibility of 5 hours seems like a bigger risk then having 2 seperate surgeries.

I agree with you 100%. I don't like the idea of being on the table for that long either and I already had my mind set on 2 separate surgeries and I'm not very bendable when it comes to me especially since I've never had surgery before.
I'm going to have to think long & hard about this. I will call the surgeon she recommended for a consult just to see what he says. I researched him & he is quite experienced in lap RNY and all types of laproscopic surgeries. He is affiliated with a surgeon's group & a bariatric group. It won't hurt to talk to him so we'll see.
Thanks everyone for your input.
