Default Am I ready? I'm torn.

So, help me out someone. I had my nurtrionist meeting, physical therapy meeting and surgeon's doctor meeting today; and I feel a little overwhelmed. Can I do this? I'm not sure.

I guess what's holding me back is my limited will power to follow the 10-day pre-op liquid only diet. No food, wow. Ugh. Will I survive this? I want to do this so bad that I can, but something is giving me apprehension. Is this typical?

All I can say is that I was a food a holic pre op. The 24 hours of clear liquids pre op all about killed me....then I got this marvelous tool and my attitude changed. Sure there were moment of food lust along the way and I still enjoy food, but with respect for the food and my body. Pre op is much harder than post with regards to resisting food.

I totally agree with Dyann. For me, it was like a switch was flipped and my compulsion to eat wasn't there anymore.

yep, what she said. Pre-op I never thought 1/2 cup of chili would be my dinner and I would be almost stuffed from it.

I also think that the pre-op diet is hard because you know you will never be able to eat like you did before, and you are mourning the loss.

The pre-op liquid diet is an emotional roller coaster, that's for sure... but most people will tell you that, if you stick it out, it DOES get a lot easier by about Day 2 or 3. That was definitely true in my case-- the first 48 hours were the worst, but I just kept telling myself, "this isn't going to last forever," and reminding myself that the point of the liquid diet isn't just as a "test," but more importantly it's to shrink your liver and thus make surgery safer.

So every time I thought about cheating, I pictured having an enormous beach-ball-sized liver inside me that my surgeon would surely "nick" and I would bleed to death on the operating table. Is that cookie worth dying on the operating table??? I dare say NOT.

You've got to start telling yourself YOU CAN DO IT. 10 days is not the end of the world-- it's a tiny blip of time in relation to the rest of your life. Really, 10 days is NOTHING; it's barely a hiccup on your journey. The more you stress about it, the worse it's gonna be.

(But to answer your last question, YES-- being anxious about it IS extremely typical!)

Bardley,
What you're experiencing is completely normal! If you need and want this enough, you can and will get through your pre-op diet...like others have said, it's like a flip is switched...oh sure, you'll still have 'head hunger'...and that's another demon all together.

I went through the same thing...your "normal".. I didn't have to do a 10 day liquid diet just had to maintain my weight and not gain anymore and had to fast 24 hours in advance and that was killing me......Now I would have never thought but I dislike food all together..Food doesn't do anything for me anymore except fuel my body...Going back to the day I had to fast...Geeshhh I could of ate a cow or anything you put in front of me, today I could probably fast for days and not give a darn....My tool works very well

Good Luck along your journey!

Congrats of your approval!

I am 12 days post opp and I had to do a 2 week all Slim fast and H2O diet. I am sooo glad I did!
I am echoing what everyone else has posted but it is so true. The first day was very hard...I was almost mad. LOL Each day got better and better and slowly setting the stage for my new lifestlye.
Hard to think that the past 26 days I have been drinking my meals (on my 2 week post opp liquid stage now) but it has been really no problem.
I wish you much success and keep us posted on your journey.
