Hello Kitty Carolories Question
Hello Kitty asked such a good question in another thread (about watermelon) that I thought I would re-ask the same question - something that just isn't clear to me.
There are all kinds of charts available as to weight loss, but I have yet to find one that indicates the answer to Hello Kitty's question -- how many calories should the average person be eating at a certain stage.
For example, I'm 4'10", 5 months out (almost), and have 35 lbs to go to my goal of 126. Can someone tell me where I can find what that translates to in terms of calories I need to eat/burn, generally speaking?
Thanks, Hello Kitty, for verbalizing what I have been thinking....

Toony, thank you! I have the book, read it cover to cover more than once, but not lately!!! And I guess when I read about this subject I was pretty far from making it a priority - then. I will get my book out, and thank you so much!

Well, dangit. lol When you get your book out, share the info with me...cuz I don't have it!!!
Glad to hear someone else is pondering the same questions as me... so far I think I've only consumed like 800 calories today??? Not including dinner, which won't be much more.. so I know that's still WAY WAY less than I'm burning, but I want to make sure it's not TOO MUCH less... Ugh. So confusing! hahaha

For those of you who have the book (and i highly recommend it), the forumula, and a discussion of it, appears on Page 331.
Basically, you multiply your present weight by 10 if you ae a woman, 11 if you are a man. The total is the number of calories you will burn, with an "average" metabolism, during the course of the day if you do not do anything but wake up. Any moving around, including gettng out of bed, etc., will burn more calories.
Again, using me as an example, my weight is 161 X 10 = 1,610. Any activity will burn more calories than that - my aquajogging burns 325 calories in half an hour. On the days that I don't do that, I probably burn 1,850 calories. If I eat 800 calories a day, then there is a negative balance that applies to losing the weight. In theory, of course!!
If I don't have this straight, please correct me!!!

p.214:
Be sure you are eating enough. If you're maintaining your weight, you should be eating between 1,200 and 1,500 calories daily. Some people are araid to eat following their surgery -- they're sure they'll regain their weight. Bt you need to be sure to eat a healthy diet and get the right amount of calories to maintain your weight.
p. 231 - Metabolism
.... or if you're up for doing a little math, try the follwing formulas:
Women: 655 + (4.3 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)
Men: 66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)
For examble, Mary is 40 yr odl, is 5'5", and weights 175 pounds. So 655 + (4.3 x 175) + (4.7 x 65 inches) - (4.7 x 40 years) = 1,525 callories. The minimum no cal. Mary's body needs to fundtion is 1,525. If she exerts herself in any way at all (even getting out of bed and walking around the house), her body will use more than 1,525 calories.

.....(i wonder if that is a type-o for men... 66 +? I've double, triple checked the text) It continues on about exercise and adding calories... too much to type here, but I'm sure if you "google" how many calories per day, you'd get a web site to help out...

You can feed your information into Fitday
Fitday has a pretty good calorie measurement. You put your height and weight in your profile, and when you go over to "Activities," it tells you what your basal metabolic rate is burning in calories any given day, and then you can add activities. It's much more accurate than the 10-calorie rule of thumb that you're citing here.
I use it a lot of late, trying to get my "activity" rate up to at least 50% of the calories I burn.

Thanks for this information Toony, it's very useful to know what the daily caloric intake should be. I know for myself it takes me about 2500 calories a day to maintain my current weight. I'm wondering if that's because of my absorption issues, because it says I should take in 1747 calories to maintain a 135 weight. Although I've not taken into account my activity levels.. which are slim to none at the moment. Janie

Janie,
I was helping my daughter study her nutrition last fall (ironically while I was in the hospital) and found out that being malnourished, recovering from illness, fighting infection, etc, really revs up our metabolism, causing us to need lots more calories just to exist. It took me 7 months to recover enough to be able to store calories to maintain weight. Up till then every calorie I could possibly consume went to keeping the fires burning. So I don't doubt for a minute that you need a huge amount of calories just to keep from losing weight--forget putting any on.
Otherwise, all things being equal, it takes 10 cals per pound to keep a woman function basically and 12 cals per pound for men. 3500 calories equals a pound. If you want to lose a pound in a week you have to have a net consumption of 3500 calories less than your base amount. SOOOOOO:
a 200 lb woman:
to maintain a basic existance: 2000 calories per day
to lose 1 lb in a week: net consumption of 500 fewer calories per day (either 500 more calories of activity or 500 calories less of food, or a combination equalling this amount)
To lose 2lbs in a week, just double the above numbers. If you need to gain, just reverse the process.

You can google "BMR calculator"....that is your basal metabolic rate. It can estimate it for you. For those of you that are sticklers for accuracy, doing a test called "calorimetry" can tell you exactly what you burn, but few places do them. Maybe an exercise physiology lab.
