Default Distal vs Proximal

I emailed my doctor's office manager some questions, and one was regarding which part of the stomach was used for the pouch, as I understood the distal is stronger, and does not stretch as easily.

Here's the response:

The Dr. performs proximal - malabsorption is not as much as distal and you do not have to protein supplement the rest of your life. The distal patients I have met so far have malabsorptive issues and continue to lose weight to the point where they require intervention.

My question to everyone is: If you had Distal RNY, have you had any problems?

Thanks!

I thought distal/ proximal had ot do with how long the bypass was..... I have the shorter one and it's still too long!

I had proximal which was 100cm, which I understand to be quite common.

No gastric bypass issues for me.

Distal or proximal refers to how much of the small intestine was bypassed. Proximal bypasses about 100 cm...and distal can bypass as much as 250 cm. The distal bypass causes more malabsorption issues and blood work must be monitored more closely. In addition, it causes more frequent stools and powerfully smelly gas.

Now, as far as your pouch goes, could you be referring to the greater and lesser curvature of the stomach? For RNY, the lesser curvature is used to form the pouch, as it's musculature allows less stretch...

Goal! I did it!
105 pounds gone since my RNY
119 total pounds gone forever!
I finally have a "normal" BMI
Reached my first goal of 145...and setting a new one of 135.
Reached 135 and have decided to lose another five if I can.

I'm in the 130's for the first time since puberty!

Debbie -

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Hey, ignorance is bliss, right?

It goes to show, there are no "dumb" questions!

Prox here...

I too was told that it was only the amount of instestines bypassed...Prox being less and distal being more.

Maybe your Dr.s office misunderstood you Patrick?Hmmm

Anyway,no real issues here just a funky stoma.

Good seeing you posting there Thinman!
